Southern heritage buffs vow to use the Virginia gubernatorial election as a platform for designating April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.

The four candidates have differing views on the Confederacy, an issue that has been debated for years in the commonwealth.

"We're not just a few people making a lot of noise," said Brag Bowling, a spokesman for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the oldest hereditary organization for male descendents of Confederate soldiers. "This is not a racial thing; it is good for Virginia. We're going to keep pushing this until we get it."

Each candidate recently shared his thoughts on what Mr. Bowling called a "litmus test for all politicians." Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine would not support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Former state Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore would support something that recognizes everyone who lived during the Civil War.

Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. and Warrenton Mayor George B. Fitch would support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Many past Virginia governors honored the Civil War or the Confederacy.

In 1990, former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation's first black governor, a Democrat and a grandson of slaves, issued a proclamation praising both sides of the war and remembering "those who sacrificed in this great struggle."

Former Govs. George Allen and James S. Gilmore III, both Republicans, issued Confederate History Month proclamations. In 2000, Mr. Gilmore replaced that proclamation with one commemorating both sides of the Civil War -- a move that enraged the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Gov. Mark Warner, a Democrat, has refused to issue a gubernatorial decree on either side of the Civil War.

Mr. Kaine, another Democrat, would decline to issue a Confederate History and Heritage Month proclamation if he is elected governor, said his campaign spokeswoman, Delacey Skinner.

The south seceded because they could see the Abolitionist movement gaining ground and knew their slave-owning agrarian life was going to be ended sooner or later.

If the South hadn't left the Union slavery would have continued for at least another 40-50 years.

absent the WBTS, chattel slavery would have lasted PERHAPS another 5-10 years PROFITABLY. when the profit was gone, the slavers would have told their slaves to "get lost". that day was QUICKLY coming.

I have a set of old encyclopedias that was copyrighted in 1942 and 1953 and printed in 1957. I realize they were printed pre-PC and therefore must be suspect. I looked up the American Civil War, It was sometimes known as the War of Secession, and also known as the War Between the States. It was fought between eleven seceding States and the United States Government from 1861 to 1865.

It list two chief causes of the war. One was the question of the extension of slavery into the territory of the United States not yet organized into States. The other was the issue of states' rights. The quarrel over these two issues grew more and more bitter and finally resulted in the war.

The most interesting thing to me was the size of the armies and the casualties that occurred.

The North had over 2,500,000 soldiers. Total Union Casualties were 359,528, 110,070 were killed in battle or died of wounds. Disease killed 224,586, 24,872 died of other causes.

The Souths' forces were estimated at from 600,000 to 900,000 men. 134,000 reported killed or wounded.

If these numbers are correct the North had somewhere between
three and four times as many soldiers as the South.

Interesting isn't it.

Hey there watie! Long time no see. My fault really. I just couldn't find anything interesting on FR after our last debate & I didn't want to get walled up in the Civil War debate any more. But it's nice to see you still got it.

Insofar as the initial premise of this thread, I say let's have a Confederate Month (or Day, or Week, or whatever). I don't think having a something like that makes me (or you for that matter) a racist, pro-slavery, yadda-yadda. If must suffer a Kwaanza celebration (God knows where that came from), or a Gay Pride Week, Take Your Daughters to Work Day, Cesar Chavez Day, or any number of other quasi-Holidays I'm sure we can have a national Confederate History Month for that surely rises above those others.
