The deer hunter accused of killing six hunters and wounding two others in the woods of northern Wisconsin is believed to have resided in the Toledo area as a youth and attended Jones Junior High School.

Chai Vang, 36, of St. Paul, is listed as a student at the South Toledo school during the 1982-1983 school year, according to Toledo Public School documents.

Willie Braggs, a social studies teacher at Jones, said he remembers Mr. Vang as a student. "He was in my class in 1982 and he seemed like a pretty good student," Mr. Braggs said. "It was a real shock [to hear of the shootings]."

A wave of Laotian refugees was brought to the Toledo area in 1979 and the early 1980s. They were resettled here with the help of church groups and other local sponsors. It was not clear yesterday when Mr. Vang's family came to Toledo or when they left.

By 1994, only about 35 Hmong families remained in the area, largely because many families moved to other cities where there were more jobs available and larger concentrations of others in their ethnic group.

About 24,000 Hmong live in St. Paul.

At that particular moment in time, they weren't a hunting party, they were answering a call for assistance from a friend, who probably told them he had a stranger in his tree stand.
Personally, had I been there, I would have brought a weapon. Not because I was expecting trouble, but because I hate to leave my rifle unattended.
I can't get this wmv to load on my site. I ain't adept enough at this stuff yet.

challenging them with jail time seems little more brutal,

Vang had an open (unpaid) warrant for trespassing in a different county several years ago. He knew that the penalty for trespassing was a misdemeanor and he could ignore the fine since he already had gotten away with it. It did not stop him from applying for and receiving an out of state hunting license.

Regards,
GtG

Unarmed gang? My word, do I sense some more hostility toward the victims?

But that has been your position from the beginning. You have deliberately chosen words with loaded meanings.

How about friends? And they did not "forget" to bring their guns as you snidely imply. They had no reason to anticipate needing them and unless you anticipate needing them most people do not routinely carry. Which of course blows holes in your wild imaginings that somehow their showing up caused Vang to shoot.

Okay- you don't know why it provoked Vang. Why was it wrong then? Do you agree with my previous statement- that the hunter took the next logical step in calling the nearest help?

I've come to the conclusion that had we expended this much energy and time on the ACLU, they would cease to exist.

THAT would be GOOD THING

But the survivor's statement indicated that the hunter was going to wait for Vang to leave. That indicates that Vang WAS leaving. Why should the hunter then leave? If Vang was leaving, wouldn't the hunter logically believe that the situation was defusing?

Oh now you are saying that they were a temporary police force?

Well, one was an actual police officer but we will leave that to the side since it blows your theory of "Should have let the police handle it and no one would have gotten hurt" right out of the water.

They're just trying to build up an excuse for him because he's an minority. This endless analysis of a murderer is so typical.

I thought it was the landowner who confronted him.

I have a bad feeling that even if the hunting party chose to just leave after a brief exchange that the outcome would have been the same. Just plain nuts.

I dont want to call them a hunting party as they all seem to have forgotten to bring their guns... uhhhh....

Many hunters put away their guns when they aren't using them --- when the deer are moving it's likely dawn or dusk --- but probably the armed Vang wasn't even there to hunt deer which is why he had his gun at that time.
