The deer hunter accused of killing six hunters and wounding two others in the woods of northern Wisconsin is believed to have resided in the Toledo area as a youth and attended Jones Junior High School.

Chai Vang, 36, of St. Paul, is listed as a student at the South Toledo school during the 1982-1983 school year, according to Toledo Public School documents.

Willie Braggs, a social studies teacher at Jones, said he remembers Mr. Vang as a student. "He was in my class in 1982 and he seemed like a pretty good student," Mr. Braggs said. "It was a real shock [to hear of the shootings]."

A wave of Laotian refugees was brought to the Toledo area in 1979 and the early 1980s. They were resettled here with the help of church groups and other local sponsors. It was not clear yesterday when Mr. Vang's family came to Toledo or when they left.

By 1994, only about 35 Hmong families remained in the area, largely because many families moved to other cities where there were more jobs available and larger concentrations of others in their ethnic group.

About 24,000 Hmong live in St. Paul.

this piece of private property was VERY close to public land that is hunted by "out of towner's"

Like I said you don't spend time in the outdoors.

Yes! Exactly! It is close to public land. Which is why they would have gone up to him and asked him to leave rather then making a federal case out of it.

I hunt with permission on private land and you run into people regularly that are not suppose to be there.

Some times they are lost, some times they are dumb and some times they are there deliberately but they DON'T shoot you. This was an extreme aberration.

Calling the police over what usually end up being a mistake is a waste of time and resources when a simple "Hey buddy this is private land." will do. Not to mention if it is a mistake you don't want to put the guy in jail or have him arrested. They had no reason to believe they would be fired on.

He picked on people from the wrong state. I did 3 tours in 'Nam w/ 5th SF, 3rd BTN - '69-'72 - and wouldn't have let the Hmong subhuman filth outta there, alive, BEFORE doing the damage to my neighbors. Guarran-freaking-teed!

Try me; just one time...

...he should have called in the law...

You seem to know a lot about the shooting. Would you know the answers to some things I've been trying to find out? Had they started hunting yet? Was there a shootout? Had any of the hunters other than Vang fired their gun? Did any of the hunters survive? Vang said they fired first, is there evidence yet?

"If he really was Hmong, he won't no city dweller, he was merely living in the city. The Hmong are more country than Hank Williams."

Maybe the ones still living in the mountain jungles back in SE Asia....but Vang came to the United States as a young boy. He lived in Fresno Kalifornia, and that other blue state city in Minnie Soda. I bet he had a Kerry/Edwards bumper sticker on his Nissan.

Some people hate people. They hate more then they can love. Then there are some that are just plain evil.
