Should I move to TX (Instead of AZ??)
Posted on 05/11/2003 3:54:40 PM PDT by 1stFreedom
I'm thinking about packing up from NY and moving out to Texas. But before I consider moving out there, I want to make sure I'm not moving to another Kalifornia or New York.
What is the political climate like? Is it conservative? Republican?
What are the philosophical undertones of the population? Conservative? Liberal?
How about the faith of the population? Is there a large Catholic [faituful] population?
How are the gun laws? Open carry?
Income tax? Corporate Tax?
Is the State homeschool friendly?
How organized are Freepers out there?
What is the best place to find employment for IT workers?
What is the best place to move to avoid allergies?
Is the state moving towards the left?
Is it as dry as Arizona?

Does Texas have any of those energy wind generator machines say around Amarillo, the windiest place in the US (they are en mass in California in windy places), or do the oilmen reatain an iron grip?

I love Prescott and it's a great investment. Property values should always be on the rise.

huh??? Do you live in Texas? Even when I moved here in '79 (I was going into 8th grade), I went from a straight-C student in Kansas to a straight-A student in the revered H-E-B School district (between Dallas and FW). I don't think I learned much that I didn't learn through 7th grade in Kansas. :( My stepsons went to school there in the late-'80's--no improvements. Finally took one out in the 6th grade to homeschool and raised him from testing on 3rd- and 4th-grade levels to 9th- and 12th-grade levels in just 3 years. Even back then, there were 200 families in a homeschool group that I was in. Now, everywhere I go, I meet someone who homeschools. Texas public schools stink, and families are figuring that out, left and right!! :)

What is the political climate like? Is it conservative? Republican? State is solidly republican, but with a strong democrat party in many parts of the state. Stay away from Austin, it's a liberal hotbed.
What are the philosophical undertones of the population? Conservative? Liberal?
Diverse philosophical community. We tend to have strong traditional judeo-christian values, but there are also hippies, yippies, libertarians, and just about anything you could imagine.
How about the faith of the population? Is there a large Catholic [faituful] population?
The population in general is probably more protestant than catholic, though there are many strong catholic churches in the state. North Texas, especially the Dallas/Fort Worth area, has MANY places of worship.
How are the gun laws? Open carry?
The state has a concealed carry law. Anyone who passes the background check and successfully completes the firearm safety/proficiency course receives a concealed carry permit.
Income tax? Corporate Tax?
No state income tax. There are corporate taxes, but I'm not sure what they are. I'm under the impression that they are not as onerous as some other states.
Is the State homeschool friendly?
Yes.
How organized are Freepers out there?
There are FReeper organizations in DFW, Houston, and Central Texas.
What is the best place to find employment for IT workers?
Probably in Dallas or Austin.
What is the best place to move to avoid allergies?
I suppose that would depend on the particular allergens involved, but there is a LOT of pollen in the air all the time, and Houston, Dallas area, and probably Austin all have quite a bit of "smog" these days. If you have severe allergies, you'd better be prepared to take a lot of Claritin.
Is the state moving towards the left?
NO.
Is it as dry as Arizona?
Even Hell isn't as dry as Arizona! Seriously, Texas is a pretty humid state. In the summer, the afternoon high temperature will be in the high 90's or over 100 probably 75% of the time in the months of June - August, the humidity will be over 70%. You will sweat just standing still.

Is somebody trashing Nolan and talking up Clemens? Clemens is a very good pitcher and will probably be a first-ballot hall of famer. His career ERA of 3.15 is slightly better than Ryan's 3.19, and with 293 career wins he is likely to equal or beat Ryan's 324 career wins if he lasts another two years. However, if Clemens hopes to catch Ryan's career strikeout record, he'll need to AVERAGE 258 strikeouts per season for SEVEN MORE YEARS!
To: VRWCmember
Randy Johnson (The Big Unit) is moving up fast. He will probably pass Clemens in strikeouts next year or 2005 at the latest. If Johnson holds out, he could catch Nolan's strikeout mark by averaging 328 strikeouts for another 6 years. I don't know if he'll last that long, but he has thrown more than 328 strikeouts for each of the last 5 years.

Well guys, I was born and raised in New Mexico, lived in AZ for a year and now am in Texas.
First...Texas is a huge state, and different parts are very different. Austin in San Francisco East. Too bad because it's a lovely city except for the lousy traffic. Houston is a pit. San Antonio is nice, but there is a strong democrat base. I am in Ft. Worth and love it. Lots of true small towns within 15-20 minutes of downtown. Until this year I actually had cattle across the street, but I'm only minutes from any big city resource you want. I am not a huge fan of Dallas or West Texas (sorry folks). Sales taxes are a little high, as are property taxes, but no state income tax rocks.
New Mexico has areas that are conservative, but the Dems are tight and corrupt. I lived in Farmington, Las Cruces, Albuquerque and Socorro. I like Las Cruces, but the area is truly a tier 2 city with less to do. Farmington is great for conservative outdoorsmen, with great fishing and skiing real close, and one of the best and most affordable public golf courses on earth. But it is small town. Some big retailers, but not much else. Albuquerque...well...parts are nice, but real estate is a mess there. The builders always overbuild, and the resale market bites. Socorro may be as close to hell as I ever want to come.
I loved Phoenix. It's not for everyone. The weather is just not something everyone can get used to. Some communities are conservative, others liberal. The hiway system is a mess. Seems they looked at LA and thought their system was a good idea. If you can handle the commute, the places like far east Mesa and Chandler are great. Everything out there is pretty new, so it's just a pleasant atmosphere.
For me, I would take Phoenix. I like where I am now a close second.
