In the movie version of All The President's Men, he attempts to gain the confidence of a Nixon staffer. She says, "I shouldn't be telling you this. I'm a Republican."
"I'm a Republican too," he says. Berstein gives him a pointed look, which might either indicate "You are?" or "You're a damn liar."
It is unclear if that is supposed to mean he really is a Republican or just lying to a dumb Republican.
That might be where the idea that he's a Republican comes from.

I believe that Woodward has stated that his parents were registered Republicans.

I heard him speak for an hour or so last summer, and was somewhat pleasantly surprised. No question he's liberal on most issues. However, he seemed to have gained respect for Bush, although that's only my interpretation. He was chilling in his description of the terrorist operations around the world, and I thought overall complimentary about Bush's approach that this is a major WAR that must be fought. (Yes, he was already trying to create interest in his then-nearly-released book). He closed with a very funny Watergate story relating the fact that his mother heard TV news regarding one of his investigative pieces, and the news report described him as a liberal. His mom called him to congratulate him on his TV exposure, didn't mention the political news, and then said "Now, Bob, what's this about you being a liberal?!"
At the very least, he was a very good speaker, and very smooth in answering a pointed question re why the Post never investigated Clinton. (He claimed he wrote some unflattering pieces, and didn't seem to revere Bubba much).
But then, it was a conservative audience, so maybe he was playing to the crowd a bit...

The implication being, in case I didn't make it clear, that his mother definitely didn't approve of him being a liberal.
However, it was also clear he didn't mind being labeled as such.

I knew Woodward's father, the late Judge Woodward, quite well on a professional basis.
The Woodward's were a prominent family in Du Page county, Illinois. Du Page has always been a rock-ribbed conservative county. An affluent bedroom county, it abuts Cook county to the west of Chicago.
I never met young Bob because he was either away at journalism college at the time or had already moved to DC to start his career.
I do believe that Bob has Republican instincts. But after decades away from his roots and in the liberal confines of universities, the media, the leftist salons of the political world, and Washington DC itself, he probably is a mixed breed right now. A young man on the way up the career ladder has to "fit in" in many ways with the leftist establishment to get ahead.
His father, the learned judge, was a "moderate Republican" in a conservative county. I probably would classify Bob's leanings the same. He says he's a Republican, and I imagine he is.....just not the same kind most of us here are.

No, he's still a self-righteous, East Coast Establishment Liberal.
