Slip-up causing slip on charts for Chicks

04/03/2003

By MARIO TARRADELL / The Dallas Morning News

The Dixie Chicks' sales slide remains steady but hardly dramatic three weeks after lead singer Natalie Maines angered country-music fans with an anti-Bush comment she made to a London concert audience.

Home, the Chicks' Grammy-winning current album, sold 51,000 copies last week, which represents a 28 percent dip when compared with the previous week's 71,000 total. The first week after Ms. Maines' remark, it sold 124,000 copies. The disc remains at No. 1 on Billboard 's country-albums chart but has fallen out of the top 10 on the pop list.

The radio boycott of "Travelin' Soldier" on country stations and "Landslide" on the pop dial has, however, seriously impacted both songs. "Soldier," which had struck a chord with listeners because of its war-related subject matter, is already off Billboard's country-singles chart. "Landslide" plunged from No. 10 to No. 43 on the pop list and took a No. 1 to No. 11 dive on the adult-contemporary chart.

Meanwhile, in South Carolina, where the Chicks open their U.S. tour May 1 at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, an alternative-to-the-Dixie Chicks concert headlined by the Marshall Tucker Band has been planned for the same night. The gig will serve as a protest event for those banning the Chicks' music.

are these actual sales to consumers or are these orders by retail stores stocking the shelves? Sometimes these are just orders by retailers. For example, if a record company tells the retailer this is going to be a hot record because its "banned" and the public will want it, the retailer might be induced to buy an order of the record in anticipation of the demand.

The consumers may not buy it but, for a while the record shows sales.

Only because they have crossover appeal in the pop scene. The liberal kids who listen to pop don't have a problem with the DCs. Had an artist like Toby Keith-- who is only a country artist and not a pop artist-- done this, the drop would have been much greater.

Are you talking about the alternative concert in Greenville, SC, on May 1 when the Dixie Chicks also play their first US gig?

The DC manager's first remark after hearing what she said was, This is going to cost someone a few million dollars. I think he was thinking about his own pocket. He has been trying to blame eveyone and anyone, except the CD's themselves, for their problems. Including the Vast right wing conspiracy, and even FreeRepublic. That guy has to be a loser, like the airheads he works for.

Has anyone heard about the possibility of the sisters, Martie & Emily, dumping Nat? Also heard some buzz about Sony thinking of suing because of the loss of revenue from this and future albums.

I was in Barnes and Noble in Charlottesville, VA (home of UVa) last Saturday. Even though this particular B&N does not feature a music section, the Dixie Chicks CD was featured at the checkout counter.

GREAT POST MeeknMing.

Also, I saw a Chicksie Dicks interview with an Austrailian babe played on Extra (I think it was) last night. Maines is almost defiant and spouting her "right" to speak her mind.

I agree. And, we have the "right" NOT TO SUPPORT ANYTHING THEY DO.

Keep up the pressure and boycot all Chicksie Dicks' anything.

Thanks.

I totally agree. She has the right to free speech, and we have the right to buy what we wish. Her stupidity making her statement is the EXACT reason that agents would always insist that their Hollywood types keep their mouths shut regarding politics. Their statements can SHUT the $$ flow off by offended audience members and turn ON the hate mail.

Their rendition of "Landslide" was absolutely awful. One wonders why they even bothered.
