Word For The Day, Tuesday, 2/25/03
2/25/03

Posted on 02/25/2003 12:14:47 AM PST by Bella_Bru

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

chimerical\ky-MER-ih-kuhl; -MIR-; kih-\, adjective:

1. Merely imaginary; produced by or as if by a wildly fanciful imagination; fantastic; improbable or unrealistic.
2. Given to or indulging in unrealistic fantasies or fantastic schemes.

Her name is Dulcinea; her country El Toboso, a village in La Mancha; her degree at least that of Princess, for she is my Queen and mistress; her beauty superhuman, for in her are realized all the impossible and chimerical attributes of beauty which poets give to their ladies.
--Miguel De Cervantes, Don Quixote.

Etymology: Chimerical is ultimately derived from Greek khimaira, "she-goat" or "chimera," which in Greek mythology was a monster having the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a dragon.

We do use our fireplace a great deal. Not particularly efficient for heating, but the ambience is great and the smell that pervades through the house is terrific.

In the spring, I usually hand split wood that has been covered/dried during the winter. Great way to drop the couple of pounds of weight gained during the winter.

It's a whopping 12 below in Last Chance Gulch, Montana this morning, clear sky and winds out of the northwest at 10-15 mph. Oh well, it could be worse. Plentywood, Montana was minus 35 this morning.

Did you know my county has the widest variation in record temperatures in the US? Record Low -70; Record high 105.

CJ, when I was stationed in Rapid City South Dakota in the early seventies, I was told that Rapid City, at that time, held the record for the greatest temperature variation in a twenty-four hour period. If I remember correctly, it went from below zero to 70 degrees within 24 hours.

I can attest that the weather was strange out there, not unlike certain senators representing that state.

B-r-r-r-r !! Get close to that fire in #17 ...

Big swings in Montana, huh? Sure is.

The coldest I've ever seen was in Spokane, Washington when it got down to -20 F the winter of 68-69. The hottest was the record summer in Dallas 1980 at 113 F ...

I think Rapid City still holds that record. That's a phenomenon called a "Chinook." Warm air from a high pressure area in the southwest flows in behind a cold front. Usually the temperature change is not that pronounced. We get those here, too.
