HONEST ABE DAY

http://www.netins.net/showcase/creative/lincoln.html His life was what America was all about. An average boy, born on this day in 1809 on a farm in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky, was able to become the 16th President of the United States.

He studied hard, by the light of a fireplace, to become first, a lawyer, then a statesman. Abraham Lincoln, one of the most revered U.S. Presidents, served his country during one of the most turbulent times in its history. The term of his presidency (1861-1865) encompassed the Civil War between the States. His Emancipation Proclamation made on January 1, 1863 to free slaves; and his Gettysburg Address given on November 19, 1863 at the site of one of the most famous battlegrounds of the Civil War are still held high as classic statements of democratic beliefs and goals.

President Lincoln was also responsible for one of the most popular holidays in the U.S.: Thanksgiving Day. He proclaimed that the last Thursday of November shall be observed as such. And so it was, and still is.

Abraham Lincoln lived during tragic times and died a tragic death. While watching a performance of Our American Cousin at Washington’s Ford Theatre, he was shot by John Wilkes Booth and died a few hours later. Lincoln was the first U.S. President to be assassinated.

‘Honest Abe’ earned his nickname when he was practicing law in Illinois. It was his unfailing honesty that made him known throughout the state. When convinced that his client was right, he could argue the case strongly. If not convinced, he was hardly powerful in his client’s defense. Lincoln would persuade clients to settle out of court even though that meant he would receive a lesser fee. And, when this was not possible, he could argue a case equally as well before a judge or before an uneducated jury. To Abe Lincoln, being a lawyer or President meant seeking the truth for client or for country.

Good Morning!! Drive-by posting, before the computer cops come to apprehend me :) For anyone in the North Central Texas area...tomorrow there is a Texas United Rally at 7:00PM in Bedford, in the parking lot of the Harris HEB Medical Center (yippee I can walk to the rally). This is a pro-American, support your military, honor the office of President, sing patriotic songs, etc. event.

The guy who came up with it, is a local talk radio host. But he said it's not about him or the station. It's about Americans supporting America!!

So if you know any other Freepers in the N. Central Texas area, tell them to come out and be heard. We're tired of hearing from the actors...

Four score and twenty posts ago
A new lurker was brought forth upon this forum;
Conceived in sarcasm,
Baptised in mirth,
And dedicaed to the proposition
That all comments are fair game.

We cannot consecrate this hallowed forum;
For those who have been made fun of have already done it.

We return here daya after day, year after year
So that silliness and satire shall not perish from the Earth.

How's that???

(And tho' it shall be hard, I will try to avoid the theater ;-))

When I read his name I was thinking what a weird combination: Bonanza and Battlestar Gallactica.

Where do they come off calling him a "pseudo-singer?" Next thing you know, they'll be questioning Jimmy Dean ("Big Bad John").

Greg Garrrison, local Indianapolis radio host, says he has been on the phone with Bret Baier of Fox (Pentagon reporter) and there is talk that today they may up the alert level to RED.

This has not yet been confirmed, but I thought I would let you all know about it. Be careful out there!

I've been meaning to ask you a question and keep forgetting. I'd like to know about the politics of the people you know in the lay order of the Franciscans. (They don't spell it FRanciscans, do they? Hehe!) Specifically I'd like to know if they have strong opinions about the war with Iraq.

When I met and stayed with John Michael Talbot, it was about a month before the 1980 elections and I remember that he said, "Ronald Reagan scares me." I may be putting too much on that remark, but Talbot himself, to whatever extent he is political, seems to not be a Republican.

But I will say that his music is very Christ-centered and solid. I like that he has brought an awareness of church history to us protestants. I knew him just a couple of years after he took his vow of poverty. He didn't even have his banjo anymore. But he had a complete set of writings of the Early Church Fathers.

Congressman Buyer (MY congressman now, yay!) is on now. Says he doesn't know about the alert, but he hasn't had access to all intel. Says that half of the congressional meeting this morning was consumed with updated evacuation plans, medical information, etc. Says "This is not a drill."
