HONEST ABE DAY

His life was what America was all about. An average boy, born on this day in 1809 on a farm in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky, was able to become the 16th President of the United States. He studied hard, by the light of a fireplace, to become first, a lawyer, then a statesman. Abraham Lincoln, one of the most revered U.S. Presidents, served his country during one of the most turbulent times in its history. The term of his presidency (1861-1865) encompassed the Civil War between the States. His Emancipation Proclamation made on January 1, 1863 to free slaves; and his Gettysburg Address given on November 19, 1863 at the site of one of the most famous battlegrounds of the Civil War are still held high as classic statements of democratic beliefs and goals. President Lincoln was also responsible for one of the most popular holidays in the U.S.: Thanksgiving Day. He proclaimed that the last Thursday of November shall be observed as such. And so it was, and still is. Abraham Lincoln lived during tragic times and died a tragic death. While watching a performance of Our American Cousin at Washingtons Ford Theatre, he was shot by John Wilkes Booth and died a few hours later. Lincoln was the first U.S. President to be assassinated. Honest Abe earned his nickname when he was practicing law in Illinois. It was his unfailing honesty that made him known throughout the state. When convinced that his client was right, he could argue the case strongly. If not convinced, he was hardly powerful in his clients defense. Lincoln would persuade clients to settle out of court even though that meant he would receive a lesser fee. And, when this was not possible, he could argue a case equally as well before a judge or before an uneducated jury. To Abe Lincoln, being a lawyer or President meant seeking the truth for client or for country.

Lots of yard work to do yet, going to get some more mulsh tomorrow and do three more beds, might cut the yard next week, after the rain that is coming. I am going to start digging up some rosses soon, the ones my wife gave me so I can put them up on the farm. I have a place to put all kinds of plants up there so transplant again when we get the house finished. You know how it is, us PawPaws never get a break, just work, work, work.

MurryMom is a hit and run poster, she hates President Bush and loves all Dems. She will make some outrageous statement and then disappear.

I'm LDS (Mormon), the leaders in our church do not make pronouncements for or against war. Of course they would prefer not to be at war, but we do believe in standing up for the good principles in the world, and know that evil can sometimes only be vanquished by going to war.

Didn't God send in armies to wipe out the enemy? Several times? He defend the followers of His by doing away with the enemy. Look at how he protects Israel, no, I say again, NO country will ever defeat them. This is why this country needs to get back to God.

Here is what I think happened. Back in the Viet Nam days, you could get a deferment if you were in divinity school. I think a whole bunch of peaceniks went that route, rather than Canada.Years have passed, and now those same people are in the upper reaches of their churches. They still think like it is 1968.
Great explanation. I've oftened wondered how it is that people who are regular church-goers are, as a rule, conservative, and yet a lot of the church leaders and organizations are very liberal. I know during the sixties it was a big thing to not only care about spiritual welfare, but physical welfare and civil rights of one's parishioners. I think they've taken it a bit too far.

And those who make fun of those of us who are preparing, will be beating down our doors, demanding that we help take care of them because they didn't get food, duct tape, and plastic sheeting. Did you know that Hawaii has anti-hoarding laws, you can't store more than 1 week's worth of food in your home?

In the meantime, if the mainstream churches wonder why they are losing members, they should look closely in the mirror. While they spend more time on social issues than on spiritual matters and while they care more about making people feel good than presenting the Word of God, they are going to continue to lose members. Well said, kayak. I truly believe that a religion/church that doesn't demand something from its members (such as obedience to the 10 commandments, etc) will continue to lose members at a great number. I think people want boundaries, and someone to take stand on good vs evil in today's world.

This poor doggie. (This took place just north of where I live in Utah.)
I-15 stray eludes help for 10 weeks
Shar-pei mix is now awaiting a new home
By Tad Walch
Deseret News staff writer
OREM A canine version of "Catch Me If You Can" that played out along I-15 and in an Orem orchard has finally ended.
A black Shar-Pei mix that was found in Orem has rabies shot tags from Tennessee, but there is no record of him or his owner.
 Stuart Johnson, Deseret News |
A can of soft, delicious dog food proved too tempting for a thin shar-pei who eluded animal control officers for 10 weeks.
The black dog, which may also be part Lab, generated a dozen calls from motorists who saw him perched on a hill just north of the 800 North off-ramp on the southbound side of I-15.
Every time officers tried to catch him, the dog darted through a hole in a fence and into a nearby orchard, said Chris Jenkins, a worker at the Orem Animal Shelter.
"Every time we'd get near, he ducked under the fence," Jenkins said. "He'd disappear for a few days and then we'd get a report that he was back."
Jenkins said it appeared the dog picked his perch for a reason.
"We have no idea if someone abandoned him here, or if someone lost him out of the back of a cab," Jenkins said. "We wondered if maybe there had been an accident and that troopers didn't know a dog was there. Or maybe he was dumped in the industrial area nearby." Whatever the reason, the dog camped out as if he were waiting for someone, leaving a flattened area of grass where he spent most of his time.
The dog proved as elusive as Leonardo DiCaprio's character in the recent Hollywood flick.
Jenkins said officers began to contemplate using a dart to chemically immobilize their quarry before he was hit by a car.
He never went near a live-animal trap baited with food until Friday, when hunger finally got the better of him.
Officers found a tag around his neck that included information about a Tennessee clinic where he received shots, but the clinic has no record of the dog or its owner.
Jenkins said the dog, which still appears shell-shocked and wary, will be available for adoption on Monday at the Orem Animal Shelter at 950 W. 950 North.
For more information call 229-7575. If the dog's owner can't be located or a new caretaker can't be found, he could be put to sleep.

Hi Guenevere. The plastic sheeting and the duct tape are a duo: to keep the windows from letting in any dangerous gases, and such.
That kitty thread was...a little disturbing. Sorry, but the pictures were too much. poor bare kitties!
