The specifics we are looking for are:

1. What areas of Dallas or Houston to live in?
2. What areas should we avoid looking at to live in?
3. What churches are in the areas with a Reformed theology?
4. How long does it take to get a CCW permit?
5. What shooting ranges are in the area and worth the membership?

1. I recommend the DFW mid-cities area (Grapevine, Colleyville, Hurst, Bedford, Euless, Southlake, Keller, Flower Mound, etc. - or Coppell, Valley Ranch, etc. if you prefer to stay in Dallas county and probably have higher taxes.)
2. Avoid east and south Dallas.
3. Not familiar with "Reformed" theology and/or what denomination that is. But there are plenty of good churches that teach sound Biblical theology and doctrine. It won't be hard to find one once you decide where to live.
4. CCW permit doesn't take long (not sure of the exact timing, but you must take a safety course, undergo a "background check", and pay a fee $200 to $250 I believe) Note: Depending on your current CCW status, you may already be "licensed" for CCW in Texas under Handgun License Reciprocity agreements with other states (Click here for more info)
5. There are several good shooting ranges in the DFW area, some indoors. Here are a few links:

I don't know much about the Dallas area, except to ditto what VRC said about sticking to the suburbs. My brother lives down in the Houston area, but he is also in the outlying area. Rosenberg or Richmond seem like nice areas.

I'll dig up some links and get back with you, but here in Texas, they pretty much leave you alone when it comes to homeschooling.

Of course, regarding Reformed Churches, this depends on where you choose to live. There is an Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Duncanville, meeting at the Wycliffe Training Center. (very Conservative church) There is also a OPC Church located in Denton, Texas as well.

There are many local PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) Churches in the Dallas area.. go HERE for a list of PCA

There is ONE Christian Reformed Church in Carrollton, Texas.. (we attended this fellowship for a number of years; good people, but the denomination itself is becoming liberal. The Pastor recently moved to a Church in South Carolina, so they are presently without a permanent pastor at this time.)

We currently attend the Metrocrest Presbyterian Church in Carrollton Texas. (PCA) good fellowship, and most of the members KNOW Reformed Theology.)

I've not lived in Houston, so I can't help you there either.

Where to locate in Dallas ? Anywhere in North Dallas area would good. Carrollton is a great place to live :>)

1) In Houston, it really depends upon how much you can afford, where you work, and how long you want your commute to be. Anything over $200K can get you a nice, big 4-5 bedroom house with a gameroom in most suburbs of Houston. The closer into town you live, the more expensive.

2) Avoid anything East of I-45. Stick with N, NW, W or SW sides of town. That gives you a huge area to cover. A great website for real estate is har.com. You can't beat the home search feature.

3) There are several nice gun clubs in the area. I'll have to ask my father where he shoots now, but I think it's one of the nicer ones in Houston. Somewhere off of Westheimer and Hwy 6.

My job is requiring the relocation of my family to either the Houston or Dallas, Texas area. We'd appreciate your input on the area.

A vast difference between the two areas. If you have a choice, then I'd suggest you spend a few days looking at each one. If not, try to spend sometime in the area before making any major decisions, even if it means renting for a few months...

If you're moving to Houston, you want to live near your employer in order to minimize the commute. If you have children, you also have to consider the school district.

If possible, try to live outside the Houston city limits. The tax savings are enormous.

Homeschooling is a breeze in Texas.....no rules, basically........ I pulled my kids out of public school and began homeschooling a few years before we moved from Texas. All I did was send a letter to the principals of their schools telling them our decision.

There are no State tests, no curriculum requirements,no followups........ but, I am not aware of any school district that allows homeschooled children to participate in any of their activities such as band or choir..... you might ask around about that though.......

Having lived in several areas of Texas, I would say the DFW area is one of the nicest, but get ready for the traffic...... it is horrendous..........

Welcome to Texas. I don't know much about Houston, in Dallas try to stay in the Plano/Addison area. Avoid anything in S. Dallas, Oak Cliff, the crime rate worsens the farther south you go in the city.

There are bedroom communities, Garland, Mesquite, Arlington, Irving. While there are sections in some of these places that are good, I would avoid them for the most part because they are over run with illegals, and they can make your life miserable. If you can afford private school, take the opportunity.

I beg your pardon.

The "Mid-Cities" area of Grapevine, Colleyville, Hurst, Euless, Bedford is not overrun with illegals. In fact, to avoid the high Dallas county taxes, Tarrant County is far superior as a place of residence. The traffic is lighter, the arts are better in Ft. Worth, and housing is much less than in Plano or Addison.

I don't believe I named those, as they are closer to Ft. Worth and may be too long a drive to his place of business. Yes, Cowtown is far superiour, but that is about a twenty mile drive to Dallas.

Not sure about Reformed churches tho... We attend a Bible Church.

Tons of home schoolers, tons of CCW people. I know I'm going to get flak for this, but among my contemporaries, it's understood that the Dallas area is more "stuck up" than Houston area. Lots of "old money" in Dallas, lots of mavericks in Houston - generally speaking of course! ;-)
