Source: Parcells, Cowboys agree on 4-year deal

By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR and CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News
IRVING -- Bill Parcells has agreed to a four-year contract that will pay him roughly $4.5 million per season, and will be announced as the sixth coach of the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, a source close to Jerry Jones and Parcells said.
The announcement will culminate a coaching search by Jones that began with two games left on the Cowboys' schedule in a meeting between Jones and Parcells on Dec. 18 at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.
The final details of the contract, including that Parcells will have total control of hiring and firing of assistant coaches as well as a strong say in personnel and draft matters, were concluded in a second meeting Friday on Long Island, N.Y.
Parcells, who has walked away from previous coaching jobs that appeared imminent, including Tampa Bay last year, was expected to fly into Dallas on Tuesday for a press conference.
Jones said Monday in a news conference to announce Dave Campo's firing that he had no timetable to name Campo's successor but added, "I hope it can happen quickly." Jones publicly acknowledged having spoken to former Minnesota coach Denny Green about the possibility of becoming the Cowboys' next coach. Jones said in talking to Green, who is black, he was taking seriously a new rule among NFL owners to interview at least one minority candidate when there is a head coaching change.
Jones said his decision to fire Campo, who had three straight 5-11 seasons, "was not about what Dave was unable to do" but instead about a "change in philosophy." Jones said he was ready to hire a coach with previous NFL head coaching experience. All of Jones' previous hires - Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, Chan Gailey and Campo - had no previous NFL coaching experience.
Parcells won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants, reached another with the New England Patriots and took the New York Jets to an AFC championship game.

From what I saw yesterday, they are going to stink for awhile unless something drastic happens!
Roy Williams, the former Sooner, on defense is doing great and hope he gets surrounded by another corner and some offense for the Cowboys!
The team that surprised me yesterday was the Jets! You all should thank them for giving you guys home field throughout the playoffs. That was quite a game with so much riding on it!

What, Jerry Jones isn't coach of the Cowboys? That remains to be seen. Somehow I doubt Jones will give up control and/or Parcells won't last 4 years...
To: Norman Arbuthnot
Didn't realize that Parcells and Knight were friends. Knight has certainly brought some excitement to the Big 12!
I am all for discipline and looking forward to Parcells bringing it with him.
To: Norman Arbuthnot
The NFC East will be an absolute dogfight for the next four years. Norman you really believe that??
The Cowgirls will be in a dogfight all right .....to see who can compete to get to the bottm the fastest......
LOL!!!!

LOL!!! I am a Cowboy fan and you are not making me mad! Just wait though until we get a defense! We will be back!
To: Dog
Scratch the comment about defense -- I meant offense! The defense isn't half bad!

Nah, you're okay. If we Cowboy fans can't grit our teeth and smile in disappointing years like these, how can we truly enjoy gloating when our brave lads are doing well?

A real coach - there is a Santa.

Well, it took Coach Jones years to make the mess, so I expect it will take Parcells years to clean it up...
To: MeeknMing
The question is: Will Coach Parcells put up with Coach Jones for years?

As a long-time Giants fan, all I can say to Cowboys fans is not
only has Parcells never won a Super Bowl WITHOUT Lawrence Taylor, but Parcells will only stay
until you all promise your first-born to him, as well as your last chocolate chip cookie.
The man knows NO loyalty, his words mean nothing, and he is the ultimate mercenary.
We shall continue to enjoy pummelling Dallas with or without Billy-Boy...

We shall continue to enjoy pummelling Dallas with or without Billy-Boy... Pummeling Dallas, lately, is no big deal.
The Giants' season comes to an end in San Francisco, on Saturday.

We may be down in Dallas right now but we will be back! How many Super Bowls do the Giants have BTW?
What Dallas needs is discipline and if Parcells can wrest away some of the decision making from Jones, we might just get some better players and some discipline!
To: Gang of Five
"how can we truly enjoy gloating when our brave lads are doing well?"
Now that statement I like and am ready to gloat one of these days again! He has a huge job but I think the challenge will make him even a better coach because challenge he has!
To: PhiKapMom
Parcells is the only Hall of Fame coach who's on the market right now. Steve Spurrier's pathetic performance at Washington this year has likely scared owners away from college coaches for a while.
Jim Fassel hasn't won any Super Bowls at the Giants, has he?
I'll take my chances with Parcells.

I am with you -- I will take my chances with Parcells too!
Think it takes a rare college coach that has never coached in the NFL to deal with those players and be a very good head coach.

Was just reading on ESPN that it isn't a done deal while CBS Sportsline is saying it is. Personally don't think ESPN has not been on top of a lot of things lately. And if someone else breaks a story, the tend to deny that it is happening! Last year they had Bob Stoops from OU going to Florida no questions asked. They forgot one thing -- to ask Bob Stoops and his Family!
