In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of word for the day. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the word of the day; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....
raffish \RAF-ish\, adjective:
1. Characterized by or suggestive of flashy vulgarity, crudeness, or rowdiness; tawdry.
2. Marked by a carefree unconventionality or disreputableness; rakish.
Etymology: Raffish derives from the noun raff (chiefly used in the compound or duplicate, riffraff), meaning "people of a low reputation."
Good Morning, riffraff!

Is that really made out of cats' guts? And are those other things really made out of sheep skin? And is there a grade of cat gut and sheep skin for which we should be aware? catgut (kàt´gùt´) noun
A tough, thin cord made from the treated and stretched intestines of certain animals, especially sheep, and used for stringing musical instruments and tennis rackets and for surgical ligatures.
sheepskin (shêp´skîn´) noun
1. The skin of a sheep either tanned with the fleece left on or in the form of leather or parchment. 2. Informal. A diploma.
And just to add to it, in North America elkhide is the preferred material for bagpipe bags... except... bagpipe elkhide comes from cows, not elk. Oh well.

I saw that thread Slippy. At the risk of pissing off some of my friends, I posted a link on that thread to the Philip Morris USA website that asserts quite the opposite of the conclusions of the World Health Organization. Normally, I would expect that research data from a "health organization" would be more reliable and less agenda driven than data published on the site of a Tobacco company. In this case however, the reverse appears to be the case.

held at a half-cocked postion all night, but being held back from firing.(I'm goingto regret this...) Now Robert, you wouldn't want it to go off half-cocked, would you?
"half cock noun
The position of the hammer of a firearm when it is raised halfway and locked by a catch so that the trigger cannot be pulled."

If you were a guy I'd say you really DO need to learn to restrain yourself from DICK. But since you're not a guy I won't even mention it.
I'm a little worried about Pitt being able to beat Miami. You're a lawyer who went to Pitt, but they don't seemed to have trained you well for lawyerly stuff. You've spent the day punching up felt and picking up kids. Actually, getting felt up and punching the kids sounds like more fun. But neither sounds very lawyer-like, and if that's the sort of lawyer Pitt puts out (!), I'm not very sanguine aboot what kind of football team they're likely to greet the Candycanes with.

I don't think anyone in here gets upset with anyone else, Vast. At least I hope that's the way we are!
Isn't it odd that for years the tobacco companies have been saying smoking is not harmful, and the WHO said it was harmful. Now it's all juxtaposed.
I, personally, don't like smoking in restaurants; however, bar smoking should be dictated by the owner. Period.
Cyber and I are going back to my sister and BIL's home after Thanksgiving. They do not like smoking. We smoke outside. It doesn't matter. It's their home.
I'm still wondering where all the levied taxes on tobacco have gone.
