How long were they out? I'm suprised they didn't just ask the judge if they could just vote in the Jury Box.

Justice Served. You forgot that this is California. The jury just sentenced the taxpayers to a lifetime of appeals.

(09-16) 13:47 PDT SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A jury decided Monday that David Westerfield should die for killing 7-year-old neighbor Danielle van Dam, the little girl who vanished from her bedroom in the first of a string of high-profile child abductions across the country this year.
Westerfield, a 50-year-old engineer, had faced either execution or life in prison without parole for killing Danielle in February. He was also convicted of possessing child pornography.
Superior Court Judge William Mudd can impose the death penalty only if the jury unanimously recommends it. He also has the option of reducing the sentence to life without parole.

Inmates will carry out the sentence before the state will.

True. But it may matter to the survivors of the victims. And during those 20 years, he'll know he's on death row.
The guy is guilty. That was the key verdict. There was discretion for the jury to go either way on the penalty: horrendous crime, but not a previous horrendous criminal history. I could see that go either way.
But guilty he is.
I believe in juries. Really, they almost always do the right thing.

Poor little girl Danielle...........her death has been avenged.
May Westerfield rot in hell.

They have a perfectly good gas chamber sitting there. Oh well.
