"Artist" Nolte's complaints in May:
NICK NOLTE, the rugged American film actor who has been compared to Robert Mitchum and Jean Gabin, accused the Hollywood studios yesterday of being motivated only by money. He said that the thirty-somethings who ran them were ignorant about cinema and literature, and that their films were little more than cartoons. Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, Nolte said: “It’s difficult to find a good movie in America. The old guys that had an interest in film are gone. The heads of studios are 35. They don’t know anything about literature. It’s predictable stuff they’re turning out. I don’t want just to be thrilled by a film. I want to toss something around my head for a few days afterwards. I want to be surprised, awed, moved.”
Nolte, 60, had just finished a ten-hour shoot on Double Down, a story of deception and duplicity, for the leading Irish director Neil Jordan. He plays a down-at-heel American gambler and drug addict adrift in the South of France.
The cast is unusually international: a 17-year-old Georgian (Nutsa Kukhianidze) plays an Eastern European forced into prostitution; there is a Turkish-born Frenchman (Tcheky Karyo), a Moroccan Frenchman (Said Taghmaoui) and a Saroyevan (Emir Kusturica, who won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1955 and 1989).
