Happy Sunday all....just got up a little while ago, and began all those nagging little chores like washing clothes and such...I agree, who puts all those clothes in the hamper...there are just two of us here, and sometimes I wonder how two people can go through so many clothes...

Same goes for the garbage and the recycle....I often exclaim, 'How can two people make so much garbage'....its really quite annoying, having goblins come in the house during the night, depositing dirty clothes, and lots of garbage...

Today will be a fun day...soon I will get Bigdom up, who I am letting sleep late as he just finished up working six straight days, 11hrs a day, at the trusty post office...

Then later on this afternoon, we will head out to Commencement Bay in Tacoma, in search of things to make us happy...lots of eats, treats, beer, and fun....I dont think chair breaking is on our schedule, but who knows...

Its cloudy here today, tho still warm...sure wish it was more clear, as being on the BAY, would have given us a clear view of the Olympic Mountains to the west of us...
Well, maybe it clear up a little by the time we get there...

AC..thanks for the link about Labor Day and its origins...will have to read that later on today...

Dont know what kind of food we will find for todays eating pleasure...I do know that tomorrow, we are going to have Copper River Salmon...we always get an abundance of various types of salmon here, but Copper River is the best tasting, most wonderful salmon of all....usually the run is earlier in the year and we had a lot of it this season....dont know where the store got its supply from since the season is over, but who cares...its just yummy Salmon, and we shall enjoy it tomorrow...

We have our everyday flags flying, but tomorrow, we shall put up a very old American Flag, that belonged to my husbands father...BigDom does not like to put it up too often, as its beginning to wear somewhat, and exposing it daily to the elements would only wear on it further...but on special days, we march out to the front door, and put up our flag...it goes up next to the regular everyday flag, and it does look grand to see 2 American flags flying side by side...

The kids around here are really whooping it up, as they finally do return to school next week, I think on the Wednesday after Labor Day...we seem to be one of the last areas to go back to school...but then, we are one of the last areas to get out for the summer...probably has to do with the weather here...

Anyway, hope everyone enjoys their Sunday, this Labor Day Weekend Sunday...

Well, chores are done, so need to take my bath and get beautiful, to head out for day of fun...who knows what we shall experience...and what characters we may meet...

I have been listening to Jimmy Buffet this morning...sure do love his songs...my favorite being 'Pirate over 40'...dont know why I so enjoy that song, as I never wanted to be a pirate...but the song seems to lament being born 200yrs too late to be one of the old timey pirates...I guess some people, sometimes, do feel like they were really born in the wrong century or the wrong decade...

Which I guess, draws me to think of my dad...now he was all for progress, and the wonders that come with progress, such as new inventions, new inroads in medicine, and of course, the electronic age of radio, Tv, and naturally the internet...But there was a lingering hankering in him, for a return to a slower pace of life....

Spending a day of fishing, woodcarving, playing with us kids, while mom cooked outdoors on the grill, and then we sat around the campfire, and joked and talked, and roasted marshmallows, before retiring into our tent for the night...perhaps that is why dad loved camping so...it allowed us to return to a quieter, slower way of life, if only for a few days...

Just some of my thoughts returning to me, over this Labor Day weekend....even when I was married and had the kids, I would still go with my mom and dad when they went camping over the Labor Day Weekend...the boys loved to camp and fish and be with their beloved 'Grammie and Pop-Pop'....often Bigdom had to work some of the days of the Labor Day Weekend, and he would always tell me to go on ahead and go camping...he would be fine alone...

We usually went down to some campground or another, near the Mississippi River, as my dad so loved that river...he would watch it, and contemplate it, and fish it and be happy doing what he loved to do...fish, and woodcarve while waiting for the fish to bite...me and kids would be looking for agates on the shore, the boys playing and laughing and getting filthy...me and mom would sit together, watching our dear boys, talking about anything and everything...a slower pace of life...

Now, goodness, I am getting sappy, and making myself cry...funny how that little Jimmy Buffet song, could bring all these memories flooding back to me...

Perhaps even tho we may not want to be pirates, many of us at times, may have a hankering for looking backwards, and seeing a sweeter, gentler time, so many years ago...

I have some funny tales of things that happened over our Labor Day camping trip....camp grounds are great places to meet a whole range of folks, and indeed, I have met some winners...so altho I still have not finished up on my Greyhound stories, I think tomorrow, I will tell some tales about the folks we have met camping over the Labor Day weekends...

Cheers all...

*Sigh*

Been rather busy.. somewhat.
Kinda one of those 'Picasso-esque' weekends, the kind where nothing makes sense.
And you sincerely hope it never does.

Saw a "Cardinal Flower" on Saturday. Kinda rare in Pennsylvania, and elsewhere. It's a Scarlet Lobelia, actually. A true Lobelia, not those blue or white ones that get pawned off as one. Also rather difficult to get to when you do see the beastie. I half scrambled, half fell down an embankment in a creek gorge to go and draw one.

So I'm nursing hurt pride on the "falling down and embankment" part here.
Kinda a "Yeah, real former soldier here" moment.

Hi Dark.. I'm so glad you found a special flower.. That's a really nice happening.. I don't think I know what that flower looks like.. If you do draw a pic of it, please let us all see it?

I'm pooped tonight. Just cleaned up supper and have been working all day since early, too early, this morning.. I have been creating.. and I hope you have too. Of course I created a real mess that I have to dig my way out of tomorrow.. urgh...

Already done. Just want to clean the image up a bit.
Maybe make it a little more clear. (Might be tempted to make it a watercolor experiment..)

At the moment it's done in colored pencil. The Cardinal flower is actually close to lake red in color. Saw a red eyed vireo and a northern flicker as well, but that didn't come close to nearly breaking my butt to sketch a flower that is kinda rare.

Best part was what I was thinking while drawing it, "Now watch, it's rare or something." This after looking like I was half-levitating down the bank.
(Imagine the figure in the drawing "My descent" wearing a turtleneck and longsleeve, a stupid grin, and flailing down an embankment with binocs and a sketch pad..)

But, but.. it's FUN!

Especially if she shows up hubby by proving she can belch louder than he can. (Being a guy, this is kinda an insult. Like when Mrs Sheare does just that to me..)

It's in the works. It's kinda super rough at the moment.
Gonna put myself into the nightly coma called sleep.
And when the sun rises tomorrow, fade into a vapor and hiss at crosses...
No... wait....

I'm going to get up and try and make the sketch viewable.

Well, I suppose it's ok to break the chair, but you must be very very careful about those tags. NEVER remove them, even if the chair gets broken.. After all, it is a Federal Offense... They are suposed to stay there and hang down in sight forever and ever. %-)

Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela
September 1st 2002

Santiago de Compostela

In the middle ages, Santiago de Compostela was Christendom's third most important place of pilgrimage, behind Jerusalem and Rome. Around Santiago's Praza do Obrdorio is a collection of historic buildings with few equals in Europe. Pilgrims continue to walk to Santiago today; some of them walking from Paris, 900 miles away.

According to legend, the bones of the apostle St. James were found in Santiago de Compostela, and the great Cathedral of Santiago was built to house his bones. In the middle ages half-a-million pilgrims per year, from all over Europe, made the trip to Santiago.

To see several Webcam views you will need to download the small program but it is worth it as the webcams update every two seconds and Qunitana Square Webcam shows several different locations. With each view there is a brief history of the area. There is more more movement than Eagle Cam

Well, good morning all, seems most are off enjoying their Labor Day Festivities....

AC...great pic of that Cathedral...I love big old churches with such grand histories...will have to download the webcams later on today....

Our outing into Commencement Bay was a fun day....the day was cloudy, and as we feared, it was difficult to see any mountains, tho occasionally a sun break would clear out the clouds and the mountains would come peeking through....

Our first stop was to the Ram, a really fanastic restaurant, that had been recommended to BigDom by one of his fellow coworkers...it was well worth the trip....BigDom sampled several of their beers, but I was attracted by their rather showy menu of mixed exotic drinks, and decided to give them a twirl....all different typs of liquers, tequilas, Irish Cremes, etc, were used to make these exotic drinks, and yummy they were...and they were huge, just huge...my favorite was some sort of neon bluish-green drink, with 'Chicago' somewhere in the name, and it was enjoyed quite well by me...

We had several appetizers, as we planned to have our appetizers in one place and a full meal in another...we had coconut shrimp, tons of fried calamari(squid), and a fabulous hot crab and artichoke dip, with crostini...that dip was one of the best things I have had...huge slices of Dungeness crab, and big artichoke hearts, all cooked in some sort of delightful light sauce, and topped with melted cheese, all in a big bowl....

Well, by the time we finished all those appetizers, there was just no room at all for dinner anywhere....we were stuffed to the gills, but quite happy and satiated...We then proceeded to purchase our growler of beer for consumption at home, paid out bill(which was astoundingly modest, when we considered the high quality and huge portions)...they also have a very extensive menu, for dinner, so rest assured, we will again be back to the Ram...the service was also excellent....The Ram has a huge open aired restaurant on one side, and the bar on the other...over the bar, hangs a huge shark....interesting...

The restaurant itself, is very spacious, and all the huge windows, allow on great views of the bay....the menu is quite extensive and needs further investigation on our part...there were TVs placed all round for sports events viewing, and the clientele, ranges from very young couples with babies and children clear up through senior citizens...and all are made to feel quite welcome....so I give this restaurant the hightest rating possible....

We then headed on to a little place a few doors down from the Ram..its main specialty is Pizza, voted by readers of local newspapers as the best pizza in the Northwest...we were stuffed so decided to order a take out pizza for eating at home later on...we got the Sicilian specialty naturally, because of course, Bigdom is a sicilian....but while waiting for our Pizza, we sat on the open deck of the restaurant, right on the bay...in the open air, we watched as sailboats, motorboats, ferry boats, cargo ships coming in from the straits of Juan de Fuca, and even saw two military ships and a fireboat patroling...

Watching all the activity in the Bay, makes one realize how important the waters are, for fun, for commerce, for transportation, and for military defense....we had a few beers, our pizza was ready to go, and so we were...

We noticed that the whole of Commencement is surrounded by little restaurants, a few motels, and a super duper fish market, that we went into and made a few purchases...there is also a motel, and a real estate office...but the whole of the Bay is also surrounded by apparently Tacoma Parks management, and a superb and fine job they do...

In between the little restaurants and buildings there are whole little park areas, complete with benches, tables for picnics, and interspered with piers for either folks to just walk on, or more importantly provides ample space for those who wish to go fishing....the piers appear to be fairly new, but are placed strategically near the old pilings of old piers, piers which long ago, obviously fell apart...I like the fact that they have left the old remnants sticking out of the water, a favorite landing spot for the hordes of seagulls who flock to this area...

BigDom and I just got out of the car, and sat in one of these little aprks, talking, enjoying the day and the salty air, and watching the people go by...

So many people were out walking and running their dogs...we saw tons and tons of wonderful dogs...young couples were out with their children in backpacks and strollers....fishermen were toting their equipment and their days catch around....families were having picnics...and on the water, folks were having fun with their motorboats and sailboats...the ferrys were toting folks too and from their destinations...the cargo ships, were perhaps from some foreign land, coming to Tacoma to load and unload, the fire boats were patrolling, and the military ships were doing who knows what...

It was indeed a perfect scene, to view with the eye, as the scenes of life passed by...but it was also a scene to view with the nose, the smell of the foods being cooking in the restaurants, ,the smell of families grilling their foods in the park, the smell of the salty air, the smell of fish...
It was all too perfect....

Afterwards, we headed onto one of our little favorite places in Tacoma, the Parkway, a friendly neighborhood pub, just a little neighborhood tavern really, but they provide some great microbrew beers, and have a small menu of foods, and a very friendly intimate atmosphere...we had a few more beers, shared a huge plate of nachos, and then headed on home...

We still had our growler of beer, and a full Sicilian pizza for midnight eating and drinking pleasure...

We broke no chairs, we met no grandly interesting people, we did not experience any extremely odd situations...but the whole day was wonderful, full of grand eats and drinks, and just sitting in the Bay, watching life in all its splendor, pass by our eyes, was just fine for us...

We really had a wonderful day...of course, we felt like we had to roll into bed, being so full of goodies...
