This week I've been reading a speech by Teddy Roosevelt titled "The Man with the Muck Rake," delivered, I think, at the dedication of the Capitol building. The man with the muck rake is from Pilgrim's Progress, a person who keeps his eyes always down on the filth that he is raking and never looks up. He is a symbol of the carnally or worldly minded person, but Roosevelt uses him to point out the kind of person who always looks for the bad in others and attacks people's good character. Here's a quote:
An epidemic of indiscriminate assault upon character does no good, but very great harm. The soul of every scoundrel is gladdened whenever an honest man is assailed, or even when a scoundrel is truthfully assailed. But Roosevelt also discusses the problem of "whitewashing," covering up evil and injustice rather than exposing them and rooting them out.
My plea is...for the most unsparing exposure of the politician who betrays his trust, of the big businessman wh omakes or spends his fortune in illegitimate or corrupt ways. There should be a resolute effort to hunt every such man out of the position he has disgraced. Can you see how perfect this description is of what the media should be? They should be rooting out evil men and women from government and public life, but not attacking good character with untruth. And what do we get from our mainstream media? Just the opposite: muckrakers and whitewashers. Kind of makes you sick to think about it, doesn't it?
I'm hoping to edit this 7-page speech down to 2-3 and posting it here at FR for discussion, but not sure when I'll get to it.
I still think they do more harm than the corrupt politicians ..... because of their muckraking and whitewashing. Today's media is (are?) simply the propoganda arm of the DNC. Very few know what real journalism and investigative reporting are ..... and they even do a lousy job of just reading the memos on some days.
We need two different goo meters ...... one for the obvious messages and one for the hidden ones.
In light of these developments, the various "war plans" bandied about in the US press - with the New York Times and the Washington Post trying to outdo each other with the latest scoops - are largely irrelevant as such.
