I dont think us cityslickers have it so easy
I didnt know what easy was till I moved to tucson
do u realize in manhattan we all shlep back all those groceries by hand, and then up 3 flights of steps
I used to have muscles from doing that
I couldnt believe you can load them in car, and then take them in house

...How would you like to live where it is a two day mule ride to get to the end of the road.....
it sounds enticing to me
it is 'xactly what I dreamed bout whole time I was cityslicker

I have to agree with you about hauling groceries in the city...before we had a car, we had to walk several blocks to the grocery store, and then use one of those old lady shopping carts to haul everything home in...
Later on, once we got a car, we could at least drive to the store...but we lived on the second floor, even tho we owned our own house, but we owned it with my aunt and uncle and they lived on the first floor, and we lived on the second floor, so we had to haul groceries up those stairs...
When Bigdom and I got married, we first lived on the second floor of an apart. bldg...then we moved to a bigger flat when I got pregnant, but that was on the third floor...
You are right, we had big muscles from hauling that food up those flights of stairs...
But once in N.C., and then in Washington, we can just bring the food from the car to the house...very convenient...

subways are fun when you're kid
cause it is a train and goes thru dark tunnel
when I was in college, it was just very fast way to get somewhere
buses take forever, they stop every 2 blocks, and cant move in traffic lol
but as grown-up subways are very noisy
and not attractive way to travel, it is all underground
andysmom, chicago has subways too
arent they mostly els (elevated, above ground)

Trust me guys, Mom had more fun getting her car unlocked at the grocer.
The drive from Austin to Lake Lewisville (forty miles north of Dallas) is deadly boring - mile after mostly straight mile of interstate highway, thoughtfully broken by ungodly road work just to keep one on one's toes, or brakes - and finally after four and a half hours we arrive at my niece's home. Whew.
We all feasted on barbequed brisket with a wonderful sauce, potato salad, baked beans, cheap white bread and some tamales that were prepared by a lady who won FirstPrize at the Texas State Fair a couple of years ago. They were so fine that she and her husband quit their day jobs, and now enjoy a fine living by simply making some of the best tamales this side of Heaven.
My brother decided that home made ice cream was going to be the next menu item, so after going to the store and collecting all the fixings, the mixer was fired up to produce a most wonderful banana ice cream. I was porked out at this stage of the game. Off for a power nap in preparation for the return trip.
As I slept as a dead person, the others had a great time in the swimming pool and visited and caught up with family business, gossip, and goings on and generally had a wonderful afternoon together.
Somehow I was able to negotiate the car successfully to its special spot in the driveway. Props to me. I hate to drive these days. I used to love it, but now I want the Army to get very busy on teleportation - or wiggling your nose and magically being somewhere else, instantly.
I thank God for my family, and friends. Fading fast here, and apologies for the lame report - I'll try to do better next time - if there is a next time. ;-) JL

the trick is not to overbuy in supermarket cause we have to lug it all home
but everyone always overbuys
when I'd walk Clio, the playground was next to KeyFood (a big supermarket)
so when old ladies were struggling with those heavy shopping bags, I'd offer to take one for them, and Clio and I would walk them to their apt building
since apts were walks-up, most people did not use shopping cart
the old ladies always said, ''thank you, my husband would kill me if he knew, I'm not sposed to be carrying heavy things, I have a heart condition, but I couldn't resist the sales''

Oh, yes, Chicago has subways...some people call it the 'L', some call it the subway...now, it depends where you catch the train...sometimes its up, and outside, and elevated, hence the name the 'L'......but eventually the train does into the tunnel....
When we were kids, when we caught the train nearest to our house, it started out as the 'elevated' train, but after about five stops, it went down and then underground...so my brother and I always liked to sit in the very first seat on the train, because it had a side window, but it also had a window right in front of that first seat, and you could watch, facing forward, as the train rapidly descended down into the tunnel...we got such a bang out of that....
The subway, or 'L' or train, whatever you want to call it, sure is a quick way to get somewhere, much quicker than the bus....
There is a movie with Steve Mcqueen, cant remember the name, but there is one part of the movie, where Steve McQueen(who plays a bounty hunter), is chasing some crook in Chicago, and they wind up on the 'elevated' or 'L', when its outside and high off the ground...and then the train eventually goes underground with Steve on top of the train, and you can see him laying flat on top, because he does not want to get his head knocked off while flying through the subway tunnel on top of the train...
I like to watch that, because they show different 'L' and subway stops, that I used, when going downtown to shop, and going anywhere, that we needed to take the train...
I think that movie is called just 'The Hunter', tho I could be wrong...Its just always fun to see Chicago, and the subway in a movie...

Get the Painted Caves book I posted about yesterday and read where and how some of the rancheros live....Or Crosbys's other books..'The Last of the Californios' or 'The Kings Highway'. There are still people living up in the mountains of Baja a long way from 'civilization'. Doubt if you would like living there though....

OH my Loddy, not a lame report in the least...I loved all the descriptions of the eats and treats, and all the fun the folks had....
It sounds as if everyone had a grand time, full of tasty treats, and then able to either nap or swim or chat or gossip....heavenly....
I guess the worst part was the driving to and from the event...but its a fine report...I certainly would have preferred your day to my day, anytime...
A rousing Texas report...bravo!!!!!

Not too many places have a subway or an 'L'...and they are quite the experience....
I did ride the subway in New York City....we were staying with my dads cousin, who lived in New Jersey near New York City...it was the year of the New York Worlds Fair, and our family wanted to go, my Dad refused to drive his car in New York City...so from my cousins we took a bus to some station in New York City, and from there we caught the subway to get to the fair..
Dad felt that would be much easier than driving to the fair, getting lost probably, and then trying to find and pay for parking....so his solution was to use the subway....we were used to the Subway in Chicago, so he figured no problem...
Actually it was a little imtimidating at first, because we did not know the New York City subway system...but since most people in the tunnel were going to the fair, we just figured to follow the crowd and we got there really quick....
Also the BART train in San Francisco, goes underground for a while, and then is outside and elevated for a while...three years ago, BigDom and I were staying in Oakland, and we caught the BART train, on the outside elevated track, and then it went underground and took us to San Francisco...I must say, the BART train was a luxury ride, compared to the subways of Chicago...newer trains, bigger seats, just really nice...

We do have a lot of similarities....we were both born in the same year, both born and raised in big cities, both had a brother, and two parents in the home, so I guess that accounts for having similar experiences...
And we both love to read, to Freep, to shop, and we both love basset hounds....I guess in some ways we are kindred spirits...

I bet that Bill would love to visit some of those places in those books...being as Palo does not drive, she would need Bill to take her, and it would be nice if it was something he would enjoy as well....
