When do You Quit?
Personeal life experiance | 8-12-02 | Joe Phillips

Posted on 08/12/2002 9:27:53 AM PDT by BADJOE

In 1977 I saw a lady who was a friend and a patient of eighteen years. Let's call her Dorothy.

Dorothy was in her early 40's, she had five kids, four of whom still at home, and she was a very pleasant person.

I noticed her left eye seemed to be lower in its socket than in previous observatioins. Now this is a very unusual stituation. I referred her to my friendly ophthalmolgist with the reason for the referral. He concluded there was nothing wrong.

Two months later she came back in to my office complaining of diplopia (double vision). I again referred to to my friendly ophthalmolgist and another ophthalomolgist, who specialized in retina surgury/deep socket eye surgury, her internist, a neurosurgon, her Gynecologist and her GP. Again all MDs gave her a clean bill of health.

Thirty days later she came back in. The left eye was now a full quarter of an inch below the right eye and she was looking through a one millimeter slit between her lids. I called the first ophthalomigist again and spoke with him. He said " Goddammit Joe, I told you there was nothing wrong with her, and he refused to see her again. I called the retina man and he said let's get the neurosurgeon to take another look. All said they could not find the cause. X-Rays were negative. They took no action.

Two weeks later she could no longer see out of her left eye without holding her lid up with her fingers. I called and then personally went to see all of the physicians involved and threatened to blow the whistle on all of them if they did not get in there and solve Dorothy's problem.

They called a conference, then called Dorothy and her husband in. They decided to do exploratory surgury with five different surgeons present in the operating room, and scheduled it for the next day. I cancelled my patients for the day and went to the hospital waiting room with to be with my friend, her husband.

Eight hours later we learned the results. Dorothy would be alright and live a perfectly normal life. She died 15 years later from other causes.

The problem of all things was benign but dangerous mucoseal (Pouch of mucous) that had formed in her superior left orbit. It had eaten through the bone above her eye and if it had ruptured , she would have died suddenly. They had to saw the top of her skull off, lift her brain, drain the mucoseal, remove it and cauterize the area of its formation.

The neurosurgeon told me that if they hadn't gone in when they did, she had less than a week to live at the time of the surgury.

BADJOE, it is difficult to give advice without knowing anything about the problem. But there is one piece of advice that I keep with me at all times and it relates to every situation.

From II Chronicles 20:17..."You will not need to fight in this battle; take your position, stand still, and see the victory of the Lord on your behalf.."

When you have done all you can do, from then on the battle is the Lord's. Stand still.

Thank you Ragtime Cowgirl, dear friend for the link to come here.

BADJOE, I have no idea what has made you feel beaten down. And I am only a fairly new FReeper, but I have a lot of respect for you BADJOE. You have always been kind to me and that means an awful lot to me. I always remember those that are kind to me and give me a chance and you always have.

I will pray tonight that everything will work out that is troubling you.
I know how the heart can hurt from misunderstandings if that is what it is or efforts nade that do not work.

Jim Robinson is right BADJOE. Never give up. Sometimes we have to change things around to keep on going, but the view ahead is always the same goal and that never ever changes. Not even a little bit.Even when some fall by the way that did not have the same dedication or committment. Never ever give up.

Thank you for sharing that inspirational story, BADJOE. The "givers" of the world need a rest occasionally, like the rest of us schmoes. Get thee to a loved one, do something you love, see something beautiful...turn off the news for a day. When your rested, we'll tar and feather the NY Times editorial board. How 'bout it?
You do good work, Joe.

I'm told the motto of the Texas Rangers is:

"A little man'll whup a big man every time, if he's in the right and he jes' keeps on comin'."...

We are not alone
South Korean Freepers?

North Korea's flag is burned as protesters from various veterans and right wing groups demonstrate against the seventh Inter-Korean ministerial talks currently meeting in Seoul, South Korea, Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002. It is not my nature to threaten anyone.

Badjoe .. sometimes when folks don't listen .. you gotta do what ya gotta do ..

Sometimes when something may arise, I may say why bother and then I think .. if I don't who will??

Sometimes we need to pull the bull by the rings and do something .. anything

Why .. because it is the right thing to do and folks that trust us need our help

It sounds like this women needed you Joe and you saved her life ..

Yes, you could have walked away and washed your hands but you didn't because you care far to much about life

Over a thousand years ago, terriers were the only kind of dogs that peasants could own in England. The noblemen of the time gave their dog breeds fancy names to help show their own high position on the social ladder. Unlike the noblemen, though, the peasants did not care about giving their little terriers specific breed names. The peasants only wanted spunky and sturdy little rascals who were as tough and scrappy as their owners.

OK Joe - here's the poochies. Now sac up and have a super day. JL

Once upon a time, two frogs were playing in a barn.

They accidentally hopped into a milk can.

After swimming around in the milk it became clear to one frog that the sides were too slick to crawl out, the milk was too deep to allow for footing to jump out or a even place to rest.

He gave up and drowned.

The other frog just continued to kick, and eventually churned up a lump of butter, which he was able to crawl up onto to rest. And that's where he was when milkmaid came and fetched him out of the can.

Salvation comes in unexpected ways to people who just hang in there...
