A big business for the locals is guide services. This time of year the place is packed with tourists who come here to climb the peaks. The Huascaran trip takes about 6-days to do both peaks.

A lot of europeans come here to climb and stay. There are a bunch in Huaraz, the nearest big town, and they own hotels, resturants and do guide stuff.

I'm really dissapointed in the three. I was on a name recognition basis with Sen. Craig at one time but am fed up with the whole bunch. I was and remain an admirer of Helen Chenowith (Hage). She was great! One of the few truely conservative women in congress...was sorry to see her retire, but admire her even more for it.

Didn't Valerie do a great job! What a spectacular part of the world this is!

Interestingly, the Peruvians are great people too. Once you get out of Lima, the people are wonderful.

In photo post 204, the lads are pouring a concrete slab...they mix the concrete by hand and wheel-barrow it all over the place...this is at 14,000 feet elevation. They are the toughest people I have ever met.

Hi loddy.....nah, I haven't done it yet--I planned to not do anything with that sucker til this one was up and running and had all I wanted from POS before exacting my revenge! :) Found out XP doesn't like WIN95--and of course, I had back up all the stuff I wanted on the new computer using WIN 95.

Most of last night and some of this morning and afternoon have been spent traveling the internet and looking in catalogue! Sheesh......it appears that XP will recognize WIN 95 in some manner IF I BUY SOME SORT OF A SERIAL CABLE.....course the next thing is for me to find out that both computers have a 'serial' port.

XP supposedly has a thing called File and Settings Transfer Wizard that will work between the two computers.

Seeing as how I have'nt the faintest idea of what a 'serial' port is, nor a serial model cable, and looking at catalogs is a mind-numbing experience when there are thousands of cables, I shall call my local computer store in the a.m. to see if they know what the hell this is and if they will bother to answer a couple of questions..... :)

I'm still smiling.......well.....sort of........my brother said he didn't like the looks of that 'smile'.....LOL!!

*L* I imagine at 5'9" I would be a tower among them.
I lightened this picture a lot to show the truck in the shadows and it discolored the sky some.

Rowdee,

There used to be a guy in town who was semi-retired from IBM that used to work on our POS. He was a wizard but not cheap. There are several people pretending to be computer experts but I'd bet you know as much as they do.

I'll send you his name via FReepmail.

Helen's gonna run for the Senate - grapevine - but a very well-connected one.

Helen's also one of the few, if not the only rep, to keep their term-limit promise to the voters. Plus she's a hottie.

Is it just me, or does that Toyota have a big whip antenna with a flag, just like your glasses?...

I think trying to put the sizes of things in perspective is a daunting task.....until you see a pickup alongside one of the tires on those trucks, the 'yardstick' isn't there...

LOL!!

All the trucks have fiber glass antennae with a light and flag on the top...to keep the big guys from squishing them. All the roads have big safety berms on the edges...we build all our berms to the height of the axel on our biggest trucks...which means us little guys flying around can't see or be seen around corners and behind berms.

I also have a flashing yellow strobe light on my truck...am I in heaven or what??

;-) Hang in there with it.
This is why I will NEVER buy a machine that I can't take in my truck back to the maker and have them HEAL it. Even with Dell being right here, I would still have to go through the UPS drill - and all that rattlin' and rollin' cannot be good for a computer.

I believe that once you get away from any large city, the people improve exponentially - whatever the country may be. Your guys are a bit on the stumpy order. ;-)

Try putting a second flag on the whip. This one a bit lower than the first, to put it at eye level for the drivers of the big trucks. Might help?

Helen is great, and so is her husband, Wayne Hage. Wayne has fought the good fight against the USFS in Nevada and won. He is as tough as they make'em and plays a pretty good piano too.

Wayne's wife passed away during the big battles that the family fought and through his required political activism met and married Helen. They are wonderful people and have my deepest respect.
