Hi Swerve - can't say that I agree that alcoholism is genetic - it is behavioral. A predisposition to intolerance or addiction or allergic reactions to various substances may be genetic, but voluntary consumption of alcohol is a choice one makes and then repeats even after the adverse personal effects are known, until the compulsion eventually takes over the decision-making process. It may be a similar progression to that of "homosexuality" - but it begins with a choice.

IN THE EARLY DAYS OF LEMHI COUNTY, from the July 4, 2002, issue of The Recorder Herald

50 Years Ago - 1952
* Jerry Smith, Salmon, has been named director of the city's summer program for youngsters, it was announced this week by Gerald Butler, mayor.
* The first fire lookouts in the Salmon National Forest were manned this week, it was reported by the forest service here, as the beginning of the fire season has been noted.
* A new 30-passenger school bus has been purchased by the Leadore school district, it was announced today by Sam H. Fletcher, superintendent.

60 Years Ago - 1942
* Mrs. Annie Marshall, better known in this county as Mrs. Jack Marshall, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Roberts, at the age of 81 years. Death came on June 28, 1942, and was due to old age. She had been ill for the last year.
* There is plenty of sugar available for canning, according to a statement by the sugar rationing board for Lemhi county.
* Mrs. Gilmore Denny has sold the Royal Cafe to Vern Jolly who has taken over the management of the restaurant. Mrs. Denny will join her husband on the coast at a later date. He is going into war work, having recently finished the prescribed courses at the sheet metal training in Salmon.

70 Years Ago - 1932
* FOR RENT: Five room residence with bath and garage; good location on the bar, $20 per month. Inquire Recorder Herald.
* The Salmon band held a business meeting last Thursday evening for the purpose of laying plans for the future. It is hoped that the organization may be able to hang together in spite of the fact that the bandmaster's salary has been stricken from the city budget.
* Dr. Lee was a business and professional visitor to Leadore the fore part of the week, driving up from Salmon.

80 Years Ago - 1922
* The infant baby of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Bradley, residing at their home ranch on Sandy creek, narrowly escaped a horrible death a few days ago in an attack by a savage sow. The child was playing in the yard as the mother had gone to drive a bunch of turkeys, when the sow reached the child whom it viciously grabbed. There was no time lost by the mother as she pulled her own away to her arms, running to the house as the beast followed in lust for blood. The child's wounds are not serious.
* NOTICE - PERSONAL - The person who took from a disabled Ford car standing on the road near Bill Boomer's ranch one of the tires may return the same and avoid trouble, otherwise there will be prosecution. HENRY NEAL, Carmen, Idaho.

90 Years Ago - 1912
* Tuesday evening E.C. Frazier, manager of the Salmon Steam Laundry, suffered a very painful accident that will prove a very serious handicap in his business for some time. While attempting to crank Dr. Hamner's big Buick car, the engine back-fired and the crank-handle, kicking back, struck his right arm just below the wrist, causing a fracture of the radius bone.
* On Thursday afternoon at the M.E. Methodist Church Mr. Henry Britt was married to Miss Marie Lendhardt, Rev. R.L.L. Barnstable officiating.
* Ed O'Neal of the Pahsimarai was called to Salmon last week as a witness in one of the cases at law.

100 Years Ago - 1902
* FOR SALE -- Buggies, Surries, Road Wagons and all kinds of vehicles. Emerson Hill, dealer in General Merchandise.
* Counterfeit money is in circulation throughout the eastern part of Oregon, and it is liable to be put out here at any time. The pieces are said to be lead and very poor imitation.
* Last Sunday was the hottest of the season, the mercury flirting around the 100 mark.
* The first strawberries of the season were brought up from Rose Bros. ranch below Noble, on Sunday. They were delicious.
* O.T.Clough is about again, but he looks ill enough to be still in bed.

110 Years Ago - 1892
* Hoo Dai, a Chinaman, was arrested on Friday, charged with selling liquor to the Indians. Tis-se-dimmet was the Indian who purchased the liquor, and he went to the Agency while under the influence of the fire-water and began to create a disturbance, when Ten-Doy promptly had him arrested. When searched a bottle of whiskey and water was found in his possession. He was brought to this city, and upon exmination confessed his guilt. He was fined $50 and costs, in default of payment he is enjoying the hospitality of Sheriff Potter.
* Spring chicken served to order at the Palace Restaurant.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

As always, the war years are interesting. I remember my parents and grandparents talking about 'sugar' being rationed along with other stuff as I was growing up. Even a very unpopulated county apparently had people serving on various 'rationing' boards.

And speaking of scarcity of people, to find out the city of Salmon actually paid a bandmaster....well, they probably didn't have many other amenities for which to charge property owners' taxes for!

And the Attack of the Sow sort of falls in with lasts nights stories of mountain lions. For city dwellers: female hogs can be very, very mean. My kid brother still has scars on his back from where in desperation to get away from a sow, he was on his hands and knees going under barbed wire fences--she was grabbing/biting at his leg--he was about 5 - 6 years old at the time. She was chasing all of us and he was the slowest! I'll never forget his screams.

In the oldest section, regarding the Indians and fire water....Ten-Doy was, I believe, an Indian Chief. There is a small town [don't blink your eyes going by or you'll miss it sort of town] a few miles from here named Tendoy after him.

The dry humor of someone 'enjoying the hospitality of the Sheriff' always brings a smile to my face. :)

Wonderful - thank you. Old O.T. looked ill enough to still be in bed?

O.T. would probably sue the paper these days. ;-)

LOL! Is that a slam or are they complimenting his courage and strength?

It's almost like they had space to fill that day, glanced outside the window, and there was O.T. shuffling about - I love the hominess of the old writer with the delicious strawberries and spring chickens.

The writer sounds like my grandparents conversing. Great stuff.

Hi Rowdee,

Good stuff in this week's paper. I get a kick out of seeing names from 80 and 90 years ago still with descendents in Salmon. We are friends with the O'Neals who are still in the Pahsimarai; the Neals are still living up Carmen Creek.

"Enjoying the hospitality of Sheriff Potter", indeed!

I think you should look for a fisherman-type guy...maybe you should start hanging out at bait shops instead of bars? What do you guys think?

...bait shops? Maybe - I may have to ponder this one. But it is a better idea than IHOP or bars. I met my wife at a dinner party as a blind date - we'll have our 24th anniversary Monday.

Valerie, will you attend the FReep in Crawford if it ever gets coordinated? I MIGHT drive up for that one and maybe you could give me a clue about my digital camera. ;-)

HI--passing through again and caught this.

My brother really loves the folks up Pahsimorai way. He's scheduled or has started some work at Meyers Cove.

He came in yesterday just as pizza was delivered...he knew the little gal (Mindy or Mandy).... and we got to talkin' about old established families and how swell they generally are.

It was that way, too, in Montana.
