The movie The Great Outdoors with John Candy and Dan Ackroyd had a bat scene - that movie is a riot.

Is that the one where John Candy is sleepwalking with a bear rug on or something? That was hilarious.

Yeah, I heard that. I remember one Easter eve service at our church, it was hard to pay attention because there was a bat flying around in the church the whole time. I certainly wouldn't like one in the house.

The bear in the movie had a naked butt from an old injury. We nearly died laughing when we saw that movie, it was so silly.

Did that scene take place in a cabin in the woods? If so then it was probably the same movie.

FOFL This is one of yesterdays threads, about the swarm of 100 million bats over the Texas Hill Country.

Bat-watching still popular,
but its protection now key

We were driving home from Austin a couple of years ago at dusk, and we saw huge clouds of bats fly out from under the freeway overpasses and off into the distance. Really a bizarre sight.

In Washington state it is estimated that more than 10% of the bat population is rabid.

There must be 150,000 bats under every overpass in Austin.

Rabid, thats what I was thinking everytime he came flying at me with his mouth open... and when I was trying to pick him up in the towel.

Yes, Fourty years ago, before freeways, they were under every bridge. They don't seem to have ever been a problem. Since they are so concentrated, the State may be puttin out bait with vaccine in it like they have for racoons and coyotes

The Governor's mansion in Washington had a problem with bats - one was found in the baby's room. They've had to exterminate twice at least.

When I was a newspaper reporter I covered a sad story of a little 4 yr old girl in town who died of rabies she got from a bat. No one knew she had been bitten. A bat was found in the house, and her relatives killed it and buried it in the yard - then a week later she developed symptoms - but once the symptoms start, you can't be saved.

At the time the health dept. recommended that bats found in homes be killed with their brains intact and brought in for tests. They can determine if it has rabies from the brain tissue, and decide if the family needs preventive treatment then, while there's still time for it to be effective.
