Homeschoolers Forum
TxBec | 07/23/2002 | TxBec

I have been thinking lately it would be nice to have a thread (maybe even a forum later?) for the homeschooling families, because you know how many of us there are. This would not replace us pinging each other with all the great articles we find. It would be a place where we could discuss what curriculum we use, vent when needed, share our successes, compare notes, alert each other to cool things we find on the internet, and vent some more. I'm sure we all have found other sites with forums that we use, but since FReepers are such a cool breed, where better to start up a forum? What do you think?

This is what I say to people who ask me about socialization:

"I'm not raising socialists."

I'll add you to the list. I was doing a daily thread until before Christmas, and I really do plan to get it going again (focus, focus...)

Thanks for pinging me to this post...It's a nice rant.

Funny thing, I could pretty much give a flip about what others think anymore..I'm not here to answer to them. I used to fervently engage people when they asked the "socialization" question. Now I just give them a one sentence answer.......unless they appear genuinely interested...Because we KNOW, THAT WE KNOW.. that we are doing the right thing. Our labour is evident in the fruit that we see.......

Best FRegards,

Do you know what dictionary the "socialization" definition came from?

Yet I am still questioned about socialization, even by other Christians.

I smack myself in the forehead and say, "SOCIALIZATION? Why didn't I think of that?"

One of the funniest answers I ever heard was, "I used to worry about socialization, but now I take my kid into the bathroom every day and beat him up and try to sell him drugs."

Shalom.

Companionship with Jesus is way more important than with others (society) and I do not feel my children need to convert or adapt to this world

I understand her point about conforming to the world, and it's a good one. However, you have to be careful in how you phrase it. The highlighted portion is problematic because our relationship with Jesus is "horizontal" as well as "vertical." "Whatever you do to the least of my brothers you do unto me." We can't take a "to hell with the heretics" attitude.

LOL, Lyrica. Your son cannot be harder to teach from a parental viewpoint than my oldest daughter, who came to us with attachment disorder and is still very much diagnosed with oppositional defiance disorder. And at age 14, she is really defiant, let me tell you.

So have hope. If I can teach this child, you can teach your daughter. What works for us is to make it child-centered learning. We use a heavily-workbooked curriculum with her, A Beka. She reads well enough to read the material and do the work on her own mostly, so that avoids a lot of conflict right there. I work from a viewpoint that learning is her responsibility and her failure, and it's not about me, but about her.

Anyway, jump in and don't worry. Let me know if I can help with anything.

Absolutely. The most important thing.
How many times have I tried to do it on my own, thought I was failing or winning, and later realized God was leading me in His direction all along. It is no different for our children.
On your knees singing Holy, Holy and everything else falls into place. To say otherwise is to attempt to do it without God, perhaps without His guidance.

Sounds like something I would have written. I answer just the way you have written it. I don't even bother to explain anymore because people will not change their minds.Yes, I've had Christians ask me the same thing. The way I see it, they have not read their Bible as it does say that we are to train up a child.

Hi, I'm relatively new here and just found this thread. Is there a way for me to be pinged or added to the homeschooling list so that I can keep up with the latest?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks TxBec.

If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. Computers and the internet sure are time consuming.
