I'm not watching - but bagpipes are common at a funeral. Especially when the police are involved (and they are at this one, I think. The cops took it hard) there were bagpipes at Greg's service, too... it was in a high school gym. The sheriff's office and a pastor friend arranged most of it for me.

Yeah, I will, even if i have to pull an all-nighter or two! The good news is the new place is only five miles away, and we have several days overlap from when we have to be out of this place. We'll be moving boxes and such from Aug. 1 through the 3, then I have rented a Ryder truck on the 4th, and have a few strong backs to help move the rest of the stuff. I also consider this an opportunity to throw away a lot of cr*p.

I only watched a few minute of it, and then asked myself why I was watching. It's heartbreaking and horrifying what happened to this little girl, but I felt voyeuristic watching the funeral. Switched over to Court TV. Anyway, I really need to go pack now...

I saw only a little bit of the funeral..someone came to the door. I have huge sympathy for the family of the sweet little girl who was murdered. But, and at the risk of sounding contrary, having Cordova speak, unless the family asked him to, seems a bit much... I mean really, is he going to speak now at the memorial services of all murder, car crash etc victims in his jurisdiction?

Then again on second thought, if it gives the family and community comfort I suppose it is fine. What kind of ceremony was held for the little Van Damm girl, does anyone know?

I think the family asked him to speak .. I think opening the funeral to the public was another way of saying thank you to everyone .. which I can understand and don't hold against them

It's just that I have never seen a funeral like it ..

Well, now, THIS is an interesting little article about organic foods and naturally occuring chemicals, and a little lawsuit against organic grocers for NOT labeling the organic foods with the carcinogenic chemicals they contain, however naturally occurring they are. Excerpt:

Virtually everything humans savor in drugs and condiments—nicotine in tobacco, caffeine in coffee, the hot chemicals in chili peppers and mustard, menthol in mint, the mind-intoxicating substances in marijuana and magic mushrooms, and more—evolved as natural pesticides, as weapons to repel or kill those (mostly insects) who came to eat them.

"We estimate that humans ingest roughly 5,000 to 10,000 different natural pesticides and their breakdown products," writes University of California Berkeley biochemist Dr. Bruce Ames and other scientists in the 1997 Handbook of Carcinogenic Potency and Genotoxicity Databases.

"The vast majority of chemicals to which humans are exposed are naturally-occurring," they write. "Yet public perceptions tend to identify ‘chemicals’ as being only synthetic and only synthetic chemicals as being toxic; however, every natural chemical is also toxic at some dose."

Mo, it appears that after you posted the link about Swervie's new job everyone rushed off to Germany to get "read." Either that or you were all tossed off the site.

Nice photo Valerie. I have a patch of sunflowers in my garden that are now about 7' tall but have not yet bloomed. I grew some last year and the seed heads were as large as dinner plates.

I found a field of runt sunflowers, so I didn't have to climb a ladder to take their picture.
