BARF ALERT!
NEW YORK - Martina Navratilova defended comments about the United States she made to a German magazine last month and said she may run for public office one day.
Navratilova complained in the German weekly Die Zeit that money matters too much in her adopted homeland and that she "exchanged one system that suppressed freedom of opinion for another."
"It's depressing decisions from America are based only on how much money comes out of them in the end, and not on the question of how much health, ethics or the environment suffer," Navratilova was quoted as saying.
Recalling growing up in communist Czechoslovakia, Navratilova added that "the most absurd thing is that, in fleeing from injustice, I only exchanged one system that suppresses freedom of opinion for another."
In an appearance Wednesday night on CNN's "Connie Chung Tonight," Navratilova said how she was quoted was "pretty accurate."
"I was talking about the Bush administration making a lot of enviromental decisions, again, based on money pandering to the people that perhaps help put Bush in office," she said.
Navratilova, who defected from Czechoslovakia in 1975, explained her comment about exchanging political systems.
"Well, obviously, I'm not saying this is a communist system, but I think we're having, after 9-11, there's a big centralization of power," she said. "... Americans are losing their personal rights left and right."
Navratilova, a U.S. citizen, said she may run for office one day.
"I live here. I love this country. I've lived here 27 years. I've paid taxes here for 27 years," she said. "... I love it and I'm here and I'm trying to do my best to make it a better place to live in, not just this country, but the whole world."
Navratilova won a record 167 singles tournaments on the WTA Tour, including 18 Grand Slam titles.
She expressed her opinion, didn't she? Was there someone holding a gun to her head?
Excellent point...these liberal/socialist elitists whine about the rich oppressing the poor...how about giving all of your loot to the less fortunate, Martina? These socialists don't give a damn for the "poor and disenfranchised"...they want to keep them poor and disenfranchised so they can pander their vote.
A little bit about Martina...
Millionaire Martina
By the time of the 1983 US Open, Martina was prepared to win it. For the first time, she hired Renée Richards and Mike Estep as full-time coaches. With their help Martina elaborated upon innovative training techniques, improved her strokes, serves and volleys. Gradually, wooden racquets were replaced by new light ones, which revolutionized the game.
In 1982, showing the world her newfound power, both physical and mental, she won a record 15 singles tournaments. Besides, she won 14 double tournaments in the same year. In a total of 29 victories, she performed her best, regaining her no.1 position. Another achievement was, becoming the first female athlete to earn more than US $ 1 million in a year.
In 1983, she won her first US Open. She also won 15 singles and 13 doubles tournaments in the same year and proved her mettle, winning again at Wimbledon and the Australian Open. She could not repeat the history of the 1982- French Open victory in 1983, as she lost the final to Kathy Horvarth. But retained her status as worlds no.1 from 82 to 87, for the most part of it.
Meanwhile, a new person entered her life. She was Judy Nelson, who had had a television career during her college days and later operated some steak restaurants. She was a married, beautiful lady, and playing tennis was one of her hobbies. Martina and Judy were publicized as lesbians. The relationship lasted eight years and ended in 1991. Their separation after an unpleasant suit, retained the local medias interest for months! Link
Did you hear? Clinton is asking for tax breaks for his presidental LIEbrary? They sound alike, don't they?
$20.3 million ????
YIKES!!! I still think she's a man and had a sex change.
Naw... If Martina became a man, she'd be a rich white hetero male...the root of all evil...I think she'll retain her victim status as 1.) a woman and 2.)gay...
I resent having our foreign policy determined by oil men, the techno-pop musician writes on his Web site, And I resent having a cabinet that is filled with old men who have no understanding of the new economy. And I resent anachronistic, right wing politics that focus on absurd issues like the Pledge of Allegiance while the economy falls apart. And I resent having people who work at energy corporations determining our nations energy and environmental policies. . . .
The more they have, the more they complain (about things of which they know nothing).

Ah, but she only kept half. Which brings me to my next thought. If Marty's so concerned about the enviroment I'll give her the four words I give to many other liberals.
GET OUT YOUR CHECKBOOK!
She looks like Dr. Laura with make-up on. I bet that observation would send her into a spin.

1987 World champions Martina and Ivan Lendl
LOL! Martina DOES NOT like men, obviously.
How about Michael Jackson? He's a black activist now, HA! HA! HA! HA!
Yes, I'd rather have the checker at my local grocery store, or another nimnut artist creating our energy and environmental policies.
I have seen some of Sir Moby's art via video. To say he's a bit odd is putting it mildly.
He's the same wacko that claimed President Bush was stalking him several months ago.
I would like Martina to state in a clear, concise manner what rights we have lost. She was able to express her opinion and was not suppressed. Honestly, I think she's taken too many tennis balls to the head.
