Because he is in the same class as the military. If you start paying big death benefits, then Presidents like Clinton and Generals of all types will feel free to "spend" them as freely as money.

It just gives all planners the wrong mind set. The subsidized insurance they can buy does need to be raised to a million at least, but they should have to buy it. During Vietnam it was less than $15,000

*sigh* It seems that every tragic event is an opportunity for trial lawyers to find a deep pocket and sue the he** out of somebody, anybody, to get a huge, usually unjustified, award. Makes me sick.

It was a rhetorical question, based on the greedheads who expect to get big bucks because their family members happened to be in the WTC when it was attacked. as in, why should these folks get $1.8 mil, when Spann's family gets a year's salary? I believe federal employees have the opportunity to purchase subsidized life insurance, but I don't think they have the opportunity to buy a large policy.

For a young housewife with 3 kids and house and car payments to make, the income from a $1 million anuity is not all that generous, about $25,000/annum. It certainly doesn't constitute the aquisition of wealth.
