Since there seems to be a lull here, and an opening, I will continue my story of Uncle Oscar, begun at post #129...

Now on to Uncle Oscars love life...Oscar, was the baby of the 12 children born to great grammie...and of course he was spoiled, by all his siblings...oddly enough, Uncle Oscar, is the only one of the 12 kids who never got married...But he had his lifelong girlfriend, Marion...

I dont know when he met Marion, what their situations were at the time, and what all was involved...I just know that at least by 1945 Oscar and Marion were an 'item'...

By the time I remember meeting Marion I was a little kid in the 1950s, when we would see her on our trips back to New Jersey...Uncle Oscar, never having married, still lived at home with Great Grammie in the great big home, where all the kids were raised...Great grammie had outlived two husbands who had lived in the house, and all the other kids had moved out, when they got married...so only Oscar and greatgrammie still lived in the big house...

As great grammie aged, all of her daughters took turns coming down to the big house, cooking and cleaning...Oscar worked, paid the bills, and help care for greatgrammie...

When we went back to New Jersey for a vacation, we always stayed at the big house with Oscar and greatgrammie, because it was a big, big house, with lots of room for visitors....

And whenever we were there(which was every 3yrs) Marion would come down and see us...it was like she was one of the family...

But the thing about Marion, is that she was married to someone else, not Oscar..and she had three children, who also would come down to the big house, and me and my brother would play with them, just as if they were one of our cousins...

In this little town, there were really only two main places that most men worked..either at the Paper mill, or the Chicken Factory...those were the two main industries...Uncle Oscar worked at the Chicken Factory...

Marions husband, seems to have been a rich guy, at least by our standards...I believe he was a lawyer, who had also inherited a good deal of money from his parents...

I have never been able to figure this out...why would Marion have my Uncle Oscar as her boyfriend, when she already had a husband and three children...by all accounts, her husband was madly in love with her, bought her everything she wanted, and indeed provided her with a luxury life compared to what Oscar had to offer...Oscar was not even a particularly good looking fella...

When people live in a small town, everyone knows everyone elses business...and I do know for a fact, that most everyone in town, who knew Oscar and Marion and Marions husband, knew of this arrangement...Marions husband had to have know what was going on...

But from those early days in the 40s until all three of them died at various times during the late 1980s, Oscar and Marion remained boyfriend and girlfriend, and Marion and her husband remained married and on good terms..

Now, figure that one out...its most odd to me...

Everyone in our family knew the score, and when Marion came down to the big house, which sometimes was on a daily basis, everyone in the family acted as if she was Oscars wife...sometimes she stayed overnight in the big house, sometimes Marion and Oscar took a few weeks vacation together, and sometimes they fought like cats and dogs, just like a married couple...

As far as I know, Oscar was faithful to Marion all his life...Marions husband was faithful to her all his life...Marion cheated on her husband all the time, but only with Oscar...a very odd Menage a Trois, a situation which the three of them seemed able to live within...

What gets to me, is the length of time this situation endured..it began, and never stopped until they slowly began to die off...

Of course, I am relating this story, only from my angle or view, and stories I have heard, because that is all I know...I never met Marions husband to get his view, and of course neither Marion nor Oscar discussed these things with me...

Anyway, its very strange...

Next installment will tell of Oscars various disappearances...

OUTSTANDING work Oscar!

What a strange story - in fact, were anyone else telling
it, I probably would not believe it. Thanks so much for
finding FR and screwing up the courage to make that first
post when and where ever that might have been.

Back after more lawn efforts. ;-)

While following the lawnmower around the back yard, my thoughts were on Oscar and Marion and all their adventures back in the day.
The remind of characters out of a Larry McMurtry novel kids growing up, falling in love, falling outa love, marrying, divorcing, but still loving and sleeping around in small town America.

The real hero is Marion - any hottie who can keep two men all her life has to had something special going on for her - and I mean really, really special. Or as just occurred to me, could Mr.Marion have been light in the loafers and wanted a wife to protect his lofty standing in the community? We'll never know.

Did any of these people go to church regularly, and if so, what brand did they use?
I wonder what Great Grandma thought about all the carrying on happening around her? Evidently she at least tolerated Marion to let her sleep under her roof.
Could the kids have been Oscar's?

Thanks again for a story that made lawnmowing a pleasure - lost in thought about some tremendously unique people you introduced to me. ;-)

I just learned on breaking news that the AZ fires have merged into one wall of fire raging 50 miles across and having already consumed 250,000 acres.
30,000 evacuated from their homes.
Govenor Hull is pissed - and is blasting all the goofy ideas that the environmentalists/whackjobs have got enacted.

The 'toon legacy continues to grow.

You have given me much to ponder...I never did think about Mr. Marion, being 'light in the loafers', but that certainly is a possibility...in their time, regular small town folk, did not come out of the closet, so I do expect we will never know....

It surely is possible that at least one of Marions children was biologically Oscars, but again, we will never know...perhaps some of the older ones in the family might know, but most of them have already died, and the few that are left arent talking...but it may be, that Marion and her children were so readily accepted, because perhaps they did at least speculate, that some of those kids belonged to Oscar...

Many of Oscars siblings were regular church goers, very active in the little community church...dont really know which denomination, other than knowing none of them were Catholic...other siblings were not regular church goers...yet they all treated Marion the same...

And as far as Greatgrammie...well, I expect she had seen much in her very long life...she outlived two husbands, bore 12 children into adulthood, lost many of her pregnancies as either miscarriages, or babies dying shortly after birth...and she outlived 3 of her adult children...

Greatgrammie worked very hard, raising her kids, tending her veggie gardens, raising her own chickens for food, doing whatever it took in those days to just make it, and have some semblance of happiness...she was a dear little woman, who was loved by her kids, grandkids, greatgrandkids, and she even live long enough to have great great grandchildren...

She was featured in a local paper, with a picture of her, and her daughter, granddaughter, greatgranddaughter, and greatgreatgranddaughter...five generations all alive and in the same picture...

So I guess, Greatgrammie, had experienced and lived with, many many different life events, and knowing her as I did, I expect that she only wished happiness for her family...and if Marion provided Oscar with some share of happiness, then I guess greatgrammie was ok with that...

I remember once, when I was probably around 12, Cousin Johnny, stopped in to visit greatgrammie...they were about 2nd or 3rd cousins, and both pretty old...Cousin Johnny was kind of a self imposed hermit, living on the outskirts of town, in a small shack...When he stopped in to see greatgrammie, they wanted to be alone...us kids of course, were nosey, and hid out in the kitchen, listening...

It was all so surreal...they sat there, talking and laughing, talking about things that probably happened 60yrs ago...we just could not imagine that these two very old people were ever young...but they sure talked for a goodly while, and then Cousin Johnny left...that was the only time I ever saw him, tho I had heard about him...

Years later, his shack burned down, and he was 'burned to a crisp', as my grandmother recalled..they always told greatgrammie that he died of smoke inhalation, as they did not want her to know that they fire dept. actually think he accidentally set himself on fire, while using an old oil lamp(He had no electricity)

What a family...I know, it all sounds made up...but its all so weird, my mind could not imagine this kind of stuff...

I am concerned about Miss Palo...I dont know if she is near these fires or not, but am really concerned about her and her family...

You know, we had a prime example here at our house, about nature renewing itself, and how forests need always to be cut and thinned...

Several years ago, we had about 8 huge Douglas Firs cut down off of our property...some were just too close to the house, others just did not appear healthy...today, where each of those trees was cut down, a new fresh tree is growing in its place...we did not plant those new trees, they simply grew from cones or pods left by the cut down trees...Cutting and thinning of forests only leads to new and more vigorous growth, and the older trees serve the purpose for which we have come to rely upon them...

hi cookie
if we had had the money last summer I would have wanted a cabin in that Show Low area to get away from summer desert heat
but it didn't work out and we are in Tucson this summer
I don't think it's anywhere near us
by a miracle the fire which was raging in the Catalinas, the mountains I face, was contained, not one cabin was lost
I have been praying for those in the Show Low area
a poster from Lcom who moved to FR 6 months before us on her own lives in Prescott area (northern Arizona)
she was first one to have fires, she asked for prayers on AZ State thread, as all her relatives had houses right in line of fire
by a miracle all was saved
(I think her name is BushFan?) she is doctor
and used to post late at night with us on Lcom

Well, I am glad and relieved that you and your family are safe and sound...but yes, we should certainly pray for those who are in the line of the fire...

Its so devastating for folks to have to leave their homes, not knowing if their homes will survive intact or not...not to mention possible loss of life...

I think you are the only family I know of living in Arizona...I have lots of relative and friends in many states, but the Palo family is the only one I know of in Arizona...so my prayers are also for you guys, hoping that the fires never come anywhere near you...

hi andysmom
I just read the uncle oscar stories
they are fascinating
my hunch is Marion and Oscar were always in love with each other
I don't think the children were Oscar's
I think Marion's husband loved his children and wanted to continue having home with the children and Marion
so he allowed Marion total freedom
the interesting thing about allowing someone else total freedom, is it is the only way to give yourself total freedom
so Marion's husband may have found himself unexpectedly happy
he had Marion, his kids, and perfect freedom

Palo, you always seem to be able to make perfect sense out of the most jumbled up stories...Your explanation is as good as any....in a way, its almost kind of fun, not really knowing the true explanations of the story...we can all just speculate...
