She was interrogated - that's not volunteering. After reporting the fire and trying to pin it on campers - the forest service realized her story was inconsistant with the facts (and probably even inconsistant each time she told it). This is a crime, not an accident.

At the time the fire broke out, Barton was assigned to patrol the Pike National Forest in central Colorado to enforce a fire ban imposed because of a drought.
Barton, an 18-year Forest Service employee, said she burned the letter within a designated campfire ring, where fires normally would be allowed.

An 18 year employee! And she still doesn't know how to put out a fire of a couple of papers with a shovel and the other equipment I'm sure she had with her on patrol? Unbelieveable!

I agree, Val. The story is just too strange.

I think she was looking for some attention - maybe a promotion, by heroically putting out a fire... 18 years and she's still doing the job a first year employee would get assigned.

from Reuters:

Barton, who had been patrolling the area, had originally said she smelled smoke and found an escaped campfire measuring about 20 feet by 20 feet. She tried to put the fire out, but it went out of control, eventually turning into the biggest wildfire in Colorado history.
Two days after the fire started an investigator examined the scene and decided the evidence did not match Barton's story.
An investigation was launched and senior U.S. Department of Agriculture Special Agent Paul Steensland, an expert in wildland fires, concluded the fire was deliberately set and had been staged to look like an escaped campfire, according to an affidavit filed with the court by USDA Special Agent Joseph Crook. The U.S. Forest Service is an agency of the USDA.

Steensland's conclusion doesn't match up with the current story either.

Well, I guess I don't know all the details, but it still seems they're over-reacting. I mean it's terrible that it happened and she was doubtless being at least somewhat irresponsible, maybe a lot irresponsible although I haven't really seen that. And what is she, 18 or 38? I keep hearing different things. Anybody can make a major mistake. This one just happened to have devastating consequences.

Terry Lynn Barton(R) appears before U.S. Magistrate Michael J. Watanabe, illustrated in this sketch in Federal Court in Denver, Colorado June 17, 2002. Barton, a U.S. Forest Service employee, has been charged with starting the Hayman wildfire, the largest fire in Colorado history. (Mitch Caster/Reuters)

This is no mistake - whatever she tried to do wasn't successful, but she deliberately started a fire and broke the law and she is still deliberately lying about it. She was fully aware of the risk she was taking with OUR forest and other people's property, and she started a fire anyway (not a little loveletter fire, either).

Maybe so. I guess I just need more facts to make a judgement.

A little bit of common sense and thought can help you process the "facts." Meanwhile, those who have examined the evidence and others who have lost everything or have been displaced in frantic evacuations certainly are not making too big of a deal out her deliberately started "accident."

I agree, I don't believe her story either. It sounds like she was bitter and mad. Stupidly, destructively mad at the Forestry Service and her "estranged" husband. I have no use for or patience for women who do such terriblly selfish things without a thought for the misery they're causing in the lives of others. Thjey give the rest of us a bad rep. :)

I guess I just need more facts to make a judgement.

You've already made a judgement against the investigators and the victims.

Well I certainly think the reaction to it is exaggerated. Her crime was being stupid and careless, but it was still an accident

Her crime was setting a fire where she was supposed to be enforcing an important no-fire restriction.

Well, I guess I don't know all the details, but it still seems they're over-reacting.

This from someone who has been to a memorial for smokejumpers killed while fighting a forest fire? This was arson, and it endangered so many lives.

Fortunately for Barton, this tragedy just occurred at a different forest fire, otherwise she could be facing homicide charges, too.

WALKER, Calif. -- Three crewmen confirmed dead in crash of air tanker fighting blaze near Yosemite National Park, Federal Aviation Administration says.

No, I haven't made a judgement at all. I simply gave an impression based on very few facts. I do not claim to have followed the story closely. If I did, I might have a very different view. I am upset by the fires. My daughter and grandson are there. I have friends there. I am going back to Colorado next week and there's a good chance that we won't be able to do some of the things we would like to do because of them. There's also a chance that I know people who have been directly effected by it. And other than what has been posted on this thread, I still don't have many more facts than I did before, so I do not feel qualified to make a judgement.

Sorry, I had to reboot, then a couple of neighbors came over to see if they could help me replace the plants, shrubs and baskets that were stolen. One of them brought a hanging basket of red verbena and white impatients she had repotted from one of her own. . How sweet they are.
