I'll start. If there are any freepers in the NYC area, I have about 8 yrs experience in the home video buisness, both in retail and distribution. This knowledge could be translated to the record industry, or publishing worlds or many other industries. I also worked in operations for a now defunct e-retail dot-com. I also have shipping and customer service experience.
My educationl backround is in marketing and advertising. I'm not asking for a huge salary. Approx.$30,000 $35,000/yr with basic benefits would be nice. If you think you can help me, let me know. I'll gladly send you my resume.

It would be extremely awesome if this actually worked for anyone here. We could even keep it as a regular feature to help each other out. I see it now - the FreeRepublic employment service. :)
Hope this helps someone, if not me. NYC area may be a lost cause for the near future. It's really bad out there.

Not a bad idea... a Free Republic Classifieds! - I hope you have been nice in FR lately... If I were in a hiring position, I would do a "Find In Forum" on you... a cheap background check!
Good luck in your job search... I have been through long dry spells too... I sure hope something comes along quick.

Wish you all the best!

The dark ages are over ALL the jobs are on the internet. I am being layed off Thursday (first time for me---how much IS unemployment - I heard $300 a week?) -- so you better get to it. It's time consuming and it's work...but you are going to be unemployed until you start clicking.
How can you live on such little money?? I can't wait...I need to work REAL SOON.

I have a job, but I've relied on freelance jobs to make ends meet. Since the dot-bomb economy started, they've been hard to come by. I can do almost anything you care to name, but my most salable skill is in database design and application programming with Microsoft Access. I've done client/server stuff with Access or Visual Basic front ends, and I've also done backend stuff with DB2 and SQL Server. Email me at sterner@sterner.hep.upenn.edu_NO_SPAM (without the "_NO_SPAM" at the end) if interested.

Yep, I've been thinking about the same thing. I'm a seasonal employee at H&R Block, and things dry up right around April 15. I sure would like something a bit steadier. Trouble is, I didn't quite finish my BS is mechanical engineering all those years ago, and the lack of a sheepskin stymies me.

Unemployed professional soldier (7 years active by way of 2 re-enlistments) needs decent work. Just odd-jobbing in the meantime. Experiences are many, since I've become a Jack-of-all trades (and master of none, which is total murder when it comes time to describe what I can do). Been a field service tech for residential satellite dishes (Since the big C-Band dishes died, I am no longer useful to the satellite dish industry), mail clerk, stock clerk, quality control inspector, and a host of dirty $.25 above minimum-wage jobs. I had to leave the Army to care for my son (single-dads don't function in a light-infantry rifle battalion) and my career died. Not to begrudge my boy, not his fault my manic-depressive 2nd wife bolted. For some odd reason, the Army decided to grant my release rather than let me change to a soft (gag) MOS....my service record was excellent. Currently residing in SW Missouri, looking for work in the Springfield area. Any tips, leads, or even (praise be) offers would be appreciated. Email to todbworth@hotmail.com
Figured I'd bump this one again.
Is IT dead? I know the high-dollar jobs are tough to get any more, but 30-40K is plenty for me.

I'm in the same unemployment boat. I was writing features and news pieces for radio before I was axed, and I'm looking for similar work in the general NYC broadcast industry. The Dept of Unemployment are the biggest bunch of morons. They even surpass the DMV idiots.
Their laziness and incompetence can make you lose your benefits. Have you ever noticed that the schooling the DOL will pay for is only vocational? Basically they're trying to prepare you to become a city worker and keep you out of the private sector. They won't finance Continuing studies programs at colleges, because it's too geared toward the private sector. Afterall How can they raise taxes if they encouraged private sector jobs?
