NO, NO, NO...I hate snakes...I am terrified of them...even the little garden snakes...thank goodness we have no poisonous snakes here in Western Washington
But when we lived in North Carolina, oh goodness, the pond across the road from us had water moccasins and big old snapping turtles...One morning I woke up, and liked to drink my coffee sitting in a lawn chair, in the front yard, and in my bare feet...I got out there, and sat down, and then heard this slight whisking of the grass...looked up, and there right beside me, was a junior snapping turtle, that big jawed unhinged, and he looked like he was going to bite me...
Well, I guess I screamed loud enough to wake the hubby and kids, who came running, fresh from bed, thinking I was being killed or something...They all had a good laugh when they saw me halfway up a tree, screaming and pointing at that little snapping turtle...
All the kids in the neighborhood knew how scared I was of snakes...one day, they drove up to my driveway, with a dead water moccasin tied to one kids bike...they had found this snake at the pond, and they thought, 'Hey, lets take it to Andys and Mikes mom, you know how scared she is of these things'...those kids got a big laugh out of that...then they had the nerve to ask me for a piece of cake...(I used to bake a cake a day, so it seems, during the summer, when all the kids were out of school...it was an sweet incentive to make them behave when they all came over)...
Me and snakes, and lizards and such just dont get along...

The day was very good, if tiring. My father will be, as Westy says "with luck," 84 this autumn, and his "younger" sister was in from CA - so family does what family needs to show - show respect and show up. It was worth it.
Who knows when we won't be able to do it again? Tomorrow is promised to no man.

900 miles!!!!
I am in awe
it took my dad 9 hours to go those 280 miles to Old Forge
and we spent the whole trip in suspense if car would make it
we left on July 1 and returned on September 9
it was considered if you drove that far, you'd spend at least 10 weeks there

I once drove across texas
(of course I was 3 at the time)
I remember texas takes forever
(that's all I remember bout the whole car trip
guess we were coming back from tucson to nyc)
I'm stunned you drove 900 miles in one day
and I remember what it was like before thruways
you always have to have the map out cause you go thru towns

Boy, it surely is uncomfortable here today...its been humid all day long...now, its raining.....its only 60 degrees, but the humidity is at 93%...just plain nasty feeling...
Dizzy is completely stoned...he was into his catnip bowl, and I never thought his little face would come up for air...then when I was holding him and petting him, his eyes were glazed over, and his little pink tongue was hanging out of his mouth...hes quite the sight, when hes stoned...
To: andysandmikesmom
andysmom I had no idea
here I was eying that cute lil gila monster on ebay for you
and guess what they have water moccasin too
adorable snappin' turtle for not big bucks
I thought you'd be in bliss

Once you got up on Route 66 you could roll west hour after hour....Pull off somewhere, sleep in the car for a couple of hours and get rolling again.....Oh, the old days when I could do stuff, long gone now.....

To: andysandmikesmom
