They did a 12-stage blood panel--good news is no diabetes OR kidney disease/failure--even though her kidneys are quite small. Cataracts in both eyes. Heart is one of a much younger cat....vet still had hard time believing she will be 17 in 4 days--until I reminded her she put her mother to sleep last year at age 16.
Vet said cats are one of the most unique species in that they will connect something unpleasant with eating quite easily. She said she could have eaten something several days ago that didn't agree with her and she associates eating with "bad--no eat". I have to be careful what I feed her, but I've been doing that for quite a while....fish based foods are out as are chicken and turkey!! She throws them up.
Vet said it is not wise to medicate them when you feed them--they can make the association between the two.
Anyway, I have 3 different types of canned food to try--one like the vet gave her that she ate so well--that was for aged kitties; there is one for kidney kitties--even though she was on the high side of normal in most of those tests, the Vet said it has increased moisture which won't hurt her small kidneys...the other is a a different manufacturer of a kidney kitty food. She said I can feed her as much as she will eat--once she gets used to whatever I can get her to eat....I can even go scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, etc....she said not to feed her anything all the time, i.e., just a straight diet of liver is a no-no.
$50 later, she's happy to be home even though she got a shot to kick up her appetitite--vet said that can take 48 hours to kick in--some kind of a steroid thingy. If her appetite sort of stays puny, I can get some pills to pop her a couple of times a week.
And, of course, this is all predicated on whether she wants to live or not--the vet told me about that stuff, too!!! BTW, this is Dr. Laura! Not THE Dr. Laura, but Dr. Laura.

Stick with the wonderful tilapia guys for a fresh, sweet, light, "non-fish" fish.
Hey Loddy, thats the only way to find out! In Chile they love their "mariscos", which is seafood...and a Chilean favorite is congrio, which is an eel-like outfit. One look at these guys in the market is enough for me. They do have some great white fish that isn't so strong that the local cats follow you home.
