Keep drinking enough beer to be happy at the lessons -- we wouldn't want you to be a cross dressager.

Her back legs are real close together. She can turn on a dime, but sometimes falls. Like her feet slip out from under her. Plus she seems to get up differently than most dogs. Her back legs come up off the floor last. Like she picks up her front self and then the rear takes longer to get in line. Oh, I can't describe it. I'll try to word it more clearly and freep you later. :( My bad.

Does she enjoy getting in the water? I always found with Tess when we were traveling anywhere, i.e., she rode shotgun in the pickup....she's look around just like people...and if we drove past a place that had livestock--she remembered it because she'd get into that 'staring stance'.

And, of course, at the driveup window at the bank, they certainly passed out their share of doggie biscuits!! If not, she'd get a different sort of stare--just waiting for that tube thing to come back with the goodie.

All Border Collies appear "cowhocked" to me, but I'm not sure what the standard is for conformation. I've never known of one to have hip proplems...until they get kicked by a cow or run over by a pickup.

Oh, my.....he's gonna sit an English saddle, wear jodpurs (sp), the little helmet and coat, and post and jump or do steeplechase?

I have friends in Montana who do that...Barb's husband prefers the beer, too. :)

Molly hates drive-thru windows. She barks and raises cain at the voices. We did an Arby's one day. Whew. She hated it. Oh, she is so charming. Everybody loves her. She does such things, I never seen. She stops her ball with her back. She'll jump and bop it with her shoulder. Then just grins, is so pleased with herself. :)Plus, she is a real flirt. Everyone loves to watch her jump rope. She'll bring the rope to me. She knows the names of her toys and treats. Impresses the stew out of folks. LOL. Her picture has been taken so much by people we don't even know. :(

Look at your dog from the rear and look at its rear elbows...if they almost touch, that's cowhocked. In horses a little is tolerated but we like nice straight legs. Look up the conformation of your dog and read how the "standard" is described. I suspect it will say something about straight legs too.

Reminds me of a story - many years ago, I was visiting a friend who raised thoroughbreds. Asked me if I wanted to ride one. Well, sure. Put a bridle on one them, I hopped aboard (bareback, usually not a problem) and rode off. Well, what I didn't know was that this horse was a hunter (or some such thing) and I only ride western. The horse started moving faster, I pulled back on the reins to slow him down, he started moving faster, I pulled back a little more, and he started going faster, I pulled back a little more, and this horse just tucked his head in and was really moving!! I saw a ditch coming up, and I just knew I was going to die when we went sailing over the ditch. Well, I managed to hang on, when the horse landed on the other side, I relaxed the reins, he slowed to a walk!! When I got back, I told my friend what happened - she just assumed I knew how to ride a hunter. She said that when you tighten up on the reins, that's a signal to go faster. Oh.

My wife has been telling me similar stories...we showed a lot of quarter horses and know a little about collecting, but not quite the way these guys do it. It drives the English rider types nuts when they see us walking along with a loose rein. There's a BIG German warmblood at the lesson place, stands about 18-hands that I'm dying to climb on.

Border Collies were bred, up until virtually now, to be working dogs--not show dogs. They wouldn't want to have leg defects, but its doubtful they would be concerned about a defect the same way a show person would.

The B/Cs do seem different and unique in that regard--their stance generally is not the upright dog stance.... I've not heard of them having hip displasia, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't occur in the breed.

I recall listening to my friend's vet when her female B/C jumped out of a horse trailer on the freeway [Susie was gone a few days but we found her]...when B/Cs fall out of trucks, get hit by larger animals [cows, sheep], they tend to suffer less leg injuries and injuries in general because they roll; they are used to constant awareness of surroundings and working their bodies to the max.

That was from one of the largest vet clinics, if not the largest, in Montana.

Here, Doc Cope, while not saying the exact same thing, indicated that B/Cs tend to suffer less injuries from falling out of trucks. I happened to be in his clinic one day while he was operating on the left rear leg of a large dog--looked like maybe a cross between a Great Dane and a Boxer. All Border Collies appear "cowhocked" to me, but I'm not sure what the standard is for conformation. I've never known of one to have hip proplems...until they get kicked by a cow or run over by a pickup.
