Reminds me of a story - many years ago, I was visiting a friend who raised thoroughbreds. Asked me if I wanted to ride one. Well, sure. Put a bridle on one them, I hopped aboard (bareback, usually not a problem) and rode off. Well, what I didn't know was that this horse was a hunter (or some such thing) and I only ride western. The horse started moving faster, I pulled back on the reins to slow him down, he started moving faster, I pulled back a little more, and he started going faster, I pulled back a little more, and this horse just tucked his head in and was really moving!! I saw a ditch coming up, and I just knew I was going to die when we went sailing over the ditch. Well, I managed to hang on, when the horse landed on the other side, I relaxed the reins, he slowed to a walk!! When I got back, I told my friend what happened - she just assumed I knew how to ride a hunter. She said that when you tighten up on the reins, that's a signal to go faster. Oh.
