I used to leave mine on all the time but somebody from prodigy tech support told me that it eats up resources and was part of the reason that I have trouble maintaining a connection. I don't know that that is accurate though.

That is inaccurate information.

.38 was right about the torque-ing stress on the HD spindle when you shutdown computers several times a day. Better to leave them running continuously. (My power bill doesn't think so, though)

IN THE EARLY DAYS OF LEMHI COUNTY, The Recorder Herald, May 9, 2002, edition:

50 Years Ago [1952]
* Thursday, Mrs. Ray Skinner and son, Jimmie, returned from Idaho Falls, where they had been visiting for a few days with Mrs. Skinner's father, Len Morgan.
* FOR SALE--85 acres deeded land, all cultivated, 5 room house, new 4 unit grade A barn fully equipped. Close in, water out of Salmon river. $28,000 with terms.
* About 14 neighbors 'pitched in' to lay a new foundation for a house on the R.O.Capps ranch last Thursday, and completed the job in a day. The Capps' home, about 5 miles up the Lemhi valley from Salmon, was recently destroyed by a fire while the owners were on a trip to the East.

60 Years Ago [1942}
* Ned Smith is raising rabbits as a hobby. He started out early this spring with 27 does. He now has over 100 rabbits and they are increasing so rapidly that he has lost count of the exact number.
* "The residents of Lemhi county must buy $6,300 worth of bonds and stamps in May. These are not mere estimates, not guesses, not 'wouldn't-it-be-nice-to-do' figures but the absolute minimum required for Victory. The nation's quota is $1,000,000,000 a month. We've got to do our part." This announcement was made today by Paul McPherson, chairman of the War Savings Committee of Lemhi county.

70 Years Ago [1932]
* County Auditor Simmonds states that it is expected within a very short time a call for bids on the construction of the Lemhi road between Lemhi and Leadore will be issued.
* Folks were surprised to hear that Ray Mahoney had broken his leg Saturday while at work on the farm, about 12 miles below Shoup. Dr. Hanmer was called. Sunday morning the doctor, Vanti Mahoney, and Charles Stauffenberg left Shoup horseback. Dr. Hanmer set the leg, and Ray was able to ride to Shoup horseback. From here, he went to Salmon by car. We are all very sorry for Ray and sent best wishes for a speedy recovery.

80 Years Ago [1922]
* Dr. Hanmer was called to the Hagel ranch this morning at the report that Evald Marcossen had shot himself. It was found that the man, who had already lost the sight of one eye, chose the other mark of a pistol fired by his own hand, but the wound will not have a fatal result. It passed in at the temple and passed out through the good eye without touching a vital spot. He had used a mirror. The shot was fired at about 5 o'clock. Mr. Marcossen is a brother of Pete Marcossen, is associated with him in business, the two having been prominent as potato growers, both good citizens. There is much sympathy for them in the rash act of Evald.

90 Years Ago [1912]
* The well-known, historic Duray building in Salmon, on the corner of Main and Terrace streets, is being torn down this week, and the rubbish cleared off the lot. It has stood there for nearly or quite 40 years and was one time occupied as a dwelling, and sometimes as a photography gallery. John H. Duray, whom we believe built it, committed suicide in this house about 22 years ago. In recent years it has been occupied as a Chinese laundry. It was commonly known as the China corner, although it is really one of the best business corners in the city.

100 Years Ago [1902]
* The Butte Miner of a recent date contained a good half-tone picture of Salmon City, taken from the west end of the Salmon river bridge; also the following short write up of our town: "The chief town and county seat of Lemhi county, Idaho, was founded in 1866. From a few log cabins of that period the place has grown in magnitude until at present time it contains a population of nearly 2,000 people. Beautiful and costly residences have taken the place of log cabins, and cleanliness and regularity characterize the condition of the city's thoroughfares. Among other advantages, Salmon City boasts a modern $20,000 school building, just completed; a fine water-works system, an up-to-date electric lighting system, and an incomparable climate, both winter and summer. The industries and production of this section may be classed as ranching, stock raising, mining, coal, and lumber."

110 Years Ago {1892]
* On last Saturday night about 11 o'clock some brilliant genius conceived and carried out the idea of giving the alarm of fire by ringing the church bell. The whole town was aroused and intense excitement prevailed until some twenty-five or thirty men, after looking in vain for the fire, ran to the church only to find a long cord tied to the toll rope on the east side of the church and discovered two forms in the field. They immediately gave chase but were unable to overtake the fleeing forms. This joke appears to us to be a very thoughtless and stupid one, and we trust it will not be repeated, because this is the only means of giving the alarm and people will not turn out again to be made the point of some silly joke. At first it was thought to be young boys, but inquiries elicited the fact that they were boys of larger growth.

************

Needless to say, there seems to be something for just about everyone! I'm still laughing over the gentlemen who tried to take his own life.

The Butte Miner is, I believe, a newspaper in Butte, Montana.

RINGY---I thought you might enjoy an old-fashioned method of fundraising--from 60 Years Ago.

While the 50 Years Ago column talks about neighbors getting together and laying a foundation for a neighbor who lost their home, I saw the same sort of thing happen in Montana in the early days of our living there, i.e. 1978 - 1980. I had the privilege of meeting a dear older woman there, a Rachael Larson, who lost her husband and something like 5 kids in a fire, as well as the home. The community of Clinton got together and hit up merchants in Missoula for materials, and donations from everybody, and they rebuilt a home for her and her surviving children.

Rachael, since that horror, was a 5 gallon blood donor and always worked the blood drawing bank in the town of Clinton every year.

Makes one proud to live in communities like that where neighbors help neighbors--they don't call on government for everything.
