FR Daily Humor/Bizarre News Thread 04/18/02

Posted on 04/18/2002 7:51:34 AM PDT by Texaggie79

Due to many requests, we are posting the Daily Bizarre news thread again. The reason it was halted is because of the lack of participation by FReepers. Some threads didn't even make it past 50 posts. So we will do a trial run to see how things go.

Now back to humor......

Mexican scientists perfect worm-based tacos

Mexican food scientists have developed tacos made with small worms.

They hope the protein in the Tenebrio molitor beetle larvae, or mealworms, will improve the diet of poor Mexicans who eat corn tacos every day.

Mealworms are being made into tacos for poor Mexicans (AP)

The Potosino Institute of Science and Technology say that, in tests, people didn't really notice a change in taste.

Spokesman Ana Barba de la Rosa told newspaper Las Ultimas Noticias: "We made up some tortillas and we gave them to different people and the acceptance rate was very high."

Institute scientists have been encouraging people to eat the Tenebrio molitor worm for some time.

They say it is easier to persuade people if the larvae, more commonly known as mealworms, are mixed in with flour rather than used as a garnish.

They are now beginning a project to make worms available to every poor Mexican family. The institute will provide cultures in which the worm larvae can grow. Then the family can mash up the worms and mix them in like any other ingredient.

Ms de la Rosa said: "The larvae can be grown in little plastic boxes at 28 or 30 degrees Centigrade and feed off little bits of corn or wheat and bits of vegetables like lettuce and carrots."

Grasshoppers, ant and fly larvae, worms and assorted other creepy crawlies have been eaten in Mexico for thousands of years.

 ---------- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.02

       Title: CHOCOLATE COVERED ANTS
  Categories: Snacks, Desserts
       Yield: 6 servings

1742 lg Ants, (if they are sm.,
            -use 2,044)
       3 c Melted chocolate

Catch ants at a picnic site and keep them in a glass jar to which you
have added a teaspoon of sugar to keep them happy. (Unhappy ants are
liable to go sour before processing.) At home, pick up each ant with
tweezers and remove entrails with a small, very sharp knife edge.
This will take about 400 hours. If you are in a hurry, eliminate
this step; you'll never know the difference. Dip each ant into melted
chocolate and place to drain on waxed paper. If any of them are
still able to crawl off the paper, let them go -- be a good sport!!

And from NewsoftheWeird.com

The annual April Fool's ice cream flavor this year at the Wahlburger restaurant was vanilla diced with hamburger sandwiches (bun, lettuce, meat); last year, french fries were used (Avon, N.Y.). [Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, 4-1-02]
And they didn't even use CHEESE!

Dear God how I've missed you and this thread! It seems every since the new formatting went up, there have been far fewer posts and even fewer interesting ones.

NY Post reports today that Bill Clinton surprised a lot of folks last week when he showed up at the still-under construction condos at the new AOL building in midtown...Bubba was looking at a 5 bedroom, $4 million apartment.....I guess the 53 minute commute from Grand Central to Chappaqua is just too much of an effort for Bubba...

Couple test shop's water beds for sex before purchase

A German couple hid in a furniture store until it closed so they could test its water beds for sex.

They were caught by police after setting off alarms as they left after their four-hour love-making session.

Police in the town of Porta Westfalica say the pair, aged 21 and 17, will not face charges of illegal entry.

They told police they were worried about spending so much without a full test. Officers let them go with a warning about wasting police time.

The couple have not been named, but the man told newspaper Bild: "Even though I got a telling off it was worth it - the sex was world class."

Uh, There's A Naked Guy On My Lawn

April 18, 2002
By CARA SOLOMON, Courant Staff Writer

DURHAM -- They were naked, and there was a cop in the parking lot.

So instead of a late-night streak through DB Mart on Monday, the three teenage boys turned around and drove back down Route 17, toward home.

That was when the deer jumped into the road, forcing them to swerve - into a tree.

Then a resident called police with a report of "a naked guy on my lawn."

Two days and a hospital stay later, the teenagers were convinced that being naked had saved their lives.

"Everyone else gets into a car crash with their clothes on," said Jason Leggee, 17. "I feel the fact that we were naked gave us the extra karma to let us live."

Rumors about the accident, which happened on Route 17 near Parmelee Hill Road, had residents buzzing all over Durham Wednesday afternoon. There was speculation about a video camera found in the car. One woman said she had heard, third hand, that it had something to do with pornography. Others heard that a young girl had been in the car. But the only occupants were Leggee, Dan Deally, 18, the driver, and their friend Morgan Crum.

All of the speculation was news to Leggee and Deally, both of whom attend Coginchaug High School. They spent Wednesday afternoon at Grippo's Service Station, surveying the damage to Leggee's mother's car. They said they had not realized that the rumors were flying, and they were eager to rebut all claims of sexual deviance in the green Mazda.

"I wouldn't want to be known as the guy who was making a porno with two other guys," Leggee said.

Deally defended his decision to drive naked Monday night, saying Americans were too uptight about their bodies and too afraid of their own sexuality. But beyond that philosophical consideration, the boys said their nudity had served a practical purpose. If they had been wearing clothes, Leggee said, the fabric might have gotten caught on something in the car, further endangering their lives.

Deally emerged from the accident with bruises, scratches and stitches in his lips. Leggee said he is still traumatized by waking up in the hospital with blood streaming down his face.

"It gives me something to fall back on, that I can laugh at this," Leggee said. "I thought I was dying."

Police said they issued a written warning for failing to stay in the correct lane.

Animal Lovers Sue Utility Over Cat 'Slander'
Thu Apr 18, 8:53 AM ET

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - A Brazilian animal protection group has sued power utility Light alleging that its campaign against illegal power connections, known as "cats," blackened the image of the felines and contributed to their ill-treatment.

"We want no money, just for them to stop referring to cats in their ads, as it gives a negative perception of cats to many people, especially children," Isabel Nascimento, head of Suipa animal protection society, told Reuters on Wednesday.

Illegal connections consisting of many interlaced wires can often be seen hanging from power lines in poor areas of Rio, resembling nests or cats. "Gato" means "cat" in Portuguese, but it also means "thief."

Rio de Janeiro's main power distributor Light, majority owned by Electricite de France, has been on a crusade since February against power siphoning from the grid amid an energy shortage in the country.

Its wide media campaign featured meowing cats, calling to "say no to the cat."

Suipa says the campaign is too "aggressive" and could spur violence against cats. It alleges that the number of abandoned cats had grown 60 percent since February, and that a larger number of cats than usual had recently been found mutilated.
