Thanks, ratty -- we'll be there in June and will spend a lot of time along the Atlantic coast and try to avoid freeways. I hope to avoid travelling more than 440 miles in any one day - except maybe for on the return trip home through the inland. But Tennessee and Arkansas might be worth looking at, too.

Thank goodness that was at the roll. Yikes.

I see an island called Kill Devil Hills - that sounds interesting. That's part of North Carolina's Outer Banks.
If you go, don't miss the Wright Brothers Memorial and Jockey's Ridge State Park.
We go there for a week each August.

Bald Head Island is a lovely place. I have a client who has several children and every year one or more kids spend a few weeks at a summer camp in NC. When the parents go to pick them they all go to Bald Head for a week or two. They love it. You're right, it is pretty exclusive and fairly expensive, too. :)

That Alto Tourist Court looks fabulous!
I had to go grocery shopping - sorry to be slow to respond. Man! It's hot out there.
I took the older two boys on a trip through the western states to Texas in the spring of 99 while my parents took the younger two to Disneyland. This time I'll have the younger two and we're headed east.

Thanks for the link!

Thanks for the link! You're most welcome. The Outer Banks is one of our favorite places. If you decide to go thru there freepmail me and I'll tell you the best places to eat, etc.

We love seafood - looks like we'll be in the right place for that.

Don't they have those wild ponies??? You're probably thinking of Chicoteague or Assateague on the Virginia/Maryland border on the coast.
To: ValerieUSA
Lots of good seafood there. And some great deals. Our favorite is a place called "The Wharf" on Beach Road. It's run by a Christian family, so they're not open on Sundays and they don't serve alcohol. But the all-you-can eat buffet is worthwhile.

Don't they have those wild ponies??? I think Val would be better off sticking to the seafood
More FReepmail for Valerie

It might be best for us to avoid giant sand dunes - that always makes the boys homesick for their 4-wheelers they used to have and ride on trips to the Oregon coast. Beaches with pretty girls will appeal to them.... but not when the sun is high. I think we'll spend a few days on the coast and outer banks. Maybe Grant would be able to come down and spend a couple of days with us there before we go to Annapolis. It will take me a couple more days to figure out the schedule - I don't really like schedules.

It's been years since we were down at the Outter Banks but if I recall we went further up the island and there were these horses/ponies that ran wild up there .. I can't remember their name though
Hey Ratty .. help me out .. what am I thinking of ??

Valerie, You rent bicyles in some towns on the Outer Banks. That's a fun way to get around an island and not be concerned about slowing down to take pictures. We rented them at the little private airport on Ocracoke and had a great time. :)

I may have to skip Florida and go from New Orleans to Savannah - I can save a day's travelling and will be good for putting in a lot miles early on the trip, so we can take some time to be unhurried in the middle of the trip.
To: Darlin'
Renting bikes sounds good. Gabe wanted to bring his bike, but I didn't really want to haul it around. The van will be packed with camping gear.

Uh-oh.... "You can rent bicyles in some towns... " my bad... :)

That may be a good idea. Once the boys see the beaches (and bikini girls) along LA and the panhandle they might not want to go any further. LOL.
