I may have to skip Florida and go from New Orleans to Savannah - I can save a day's travelling and will be good for putting in a lot miles early on the trip, so we can take some time to be unhurried in the middle of the trip.

That may be a good idea. Once the boys see the beaches (and bikini girls) along LA and the panhandle they might not want to go any further. LOL.
