My dad was a trip...everyone loved him...all my teen friends, when I was growing up, idolized him...he was so funny...

After he died, I looked at his life and the way he was, and realized how eccentric he really was...when I mentionned that to my old teen friends, now much older, they all were amazed that it took me so long to realize how different and odd and funny he was...they knew it all along, because he was so different from their dads...for me, my dad and the way he was, was all I ever knew...he was really a trip and a great dad, and I have always been thankful he was mine...

MREs might be a good idea for Bill...especially if the ones you get, have the little flat heater inside the bag...all you have to do is add water to the heater bag, and it heats up and you can put the food from the MRE inside for a few minutes, heat it up, and its a hot meal...and all the food in conained in one big plastic envelope type bag, and they are not really too heavy to carry, and they are complete meals...makes things easier for Bill...he will appreciate your thoughtfulness, and thinking of helping him with his packing for his big trip...

hi andysmom
we've been out West for ten years now
and it's only now Bill is starting to plan out camping trips for himself (and Happy)
(I'm not ready to leave my 'puter)
your idea for the MREs is great!!
thanks sweetie
Love, Palo

I think my dad was eccentric too
but I only realize it in retrospect
when we set off on our 9 hour automobile ride to our summer cabin on July first
to spend summer there
he slept late before starting off
didn't bother to cash check at supermarket before we left
had no cash
and when we stopped for gas along the way
he asked man to cash check for him for extra money
he would say ''I'm a school teacher from new york city''
the man would study all of us in the car
and finally decide ok

Bill is my kind of man...I love to go camping...love the smell of the tent, and crawling into my sleeping bag...love to cook out on the Coleman stove, or over a campfire...and at night sit out next to a roaring campfire, look at the stars, drink beer, and chat with the family and other nearby campers

My dad started us out camping, when we were kids, and I started my kids camping, when they were babies, just a few months old...

To me, much of the fun of going on vacation, is the camping...

When we were still living back in Chicago, and were at one of my husbands famous Memorial Day picnis, it began to rain, while we women were just beginning to cook...all the other women and children ran for the cars, the men stayed outside drinking beer in the rain...and I stayed out in the rain, just covering myself and the grill with my raincoat...

One of the guys said to me, you act as if you have been cooking in the rain all your life, it doesnt bother you, and all the other women and children have run for cover in the cars...

Well, I had by that time been a camper for many years, and having camped in rain, windstorms, one tornado, a small flood, and other catastrophes of nature, simply flipping a few burgers in the rain seemed easy...

Camping to me, is one of lifes pleasures...

hi andysmom
camping is wonderful
I used to love it too
I'm not much into hiking these days, but I still love swimmin' in mountain lakes
and I love sleepin' on ground under stars in woods
last time we camped we didn't have a car
so all we ate were freeze dried dinners
cause we had to carry everything in our knapsacks from NYC
it rained the whole first day
and at first I didn't want to get out of my sleeping bag and out of the tent
we were in the Lake Ticonderoga area of NY State
and Bill tuned in a Vermont community radio station
it turned out to be Ollie North's first day of testimony
I hadn't watched or listened to the news in ages
and I was riveted listening to him testify
I didn't know what the story was
I just could tell he was nervous at first
then grew more self assured
Love, Palo

Will let you know when/if otter shows his whiskers again. Last I personally saw of him was July last year. Someone else saw him early in November, but since I didn't, I can't attest to the veracity of it.
Hmmm... A little more wierdness is in order? Naaah. We don't need to change the name of this thread. We just need a toga party.. No.. wait.. that was last week at Meek's house.... And there weren't any toga's... *Looks left and right nervously, then runs out the back door.*

Meanwhile...... Karsh was wondering just what he was supposed to do with the object in his hands.
"You really don't want to be holding that." Said a voice over his shoulder. He raised one eyebrow in response.
"And why not?" he asked as he held the flat linen looking oval shaped thing in the air dubiously.
"Because that is for womanly uses." the voice said dryly. He dropped it back where it had been.
"Oh." He turned to face the voice and was surprised to see Arselen there. Strange, three weeks ago, he'd appeared suddeny and helped with a situation that was fairly dire. Arselen organised a party in his honor, which he disinvited himself from. And now that she knew who he was, she was scared of him. And yet, here she was speaking to him. He was very confused. And the sound of her thoughts at that moment were deafening. He'd forgotten what that could sound like. He blinked his eyes clear, and poked at his ears. Did she just say something?
"... 're planning on running all over the face of the world hunting down who knows who while doing the Eternal knows what to whom and for anyone's guess what reason...." Now he remembered why he hadn't married back when he'd been king, and alive. And what did he just hear? '...why was he holding that pad?' What the blazes was a pad?
He held up his right hand to quiet her. Her voice stopped, at least to his ears. At least now he could order his thoughts. "I was under the impression that you are afraid of me. I was going to .." He never finished the sentence. She was taller than he was. When he said 'afraid of me' she snorted and started towards him. When he got to 'going to' she had gotten to 'going to' herself, and got a good hold of his tunic.
'Was it woven steel?' she wondered irelevantly as she gave him a healthy shove.
Karsh fell over backwards, bounced off of the nearby mattresses, and ended up back on his feet. Ghostly giggles could be heard from somewhere.
Arselen gave it another go. Karsh protested mightily, but bounced off the other side of the mattresses and landed on his head.
He sighed. Just another normal day for Shadowkeep. He didn't think he was ever going to make sense of this place.

"OOoh. How nice, a lover's quarrel I presume?" came a new voice. One that Karsh hadn't heard in years. One he had hoped he'd stilled all those years ago. His head popped up from beside the mattresses like a dark gopher and glared.
"Archon."

I camped all my life with my Mom and Dad and their friends.. Then with our own family.. I remember catching my own brook trout and cooking it in the frypan with some cornmeal.. I still have slides of my Dad, who was a riot like your Dad, shaving with the mirror on the tree. I remember my brother pushing me in the brook and laughingt, because I had no more dry clothes. lol..

I remember a small twister blowing our tent away up in the White Mountains one summer..when we were with our own kids and maybe seeing a UFO off in the trees.. The kids were very frightened, as we all saw it and heard a strange noise at the same time.. It took us all night to gather the equipment up and get back to sleep..but we still thought about the UFO.. lol

Tenting, camping, is fun, exiting, and good for the kids.. All my kids still love it today, and now go on their own..with their little ones..

Camping is for sure a great tradition to pass along down through the family....sounds like your family, was much like my family....its such great fun, and so much better for the kids, I believe, to be outside, go fishing, light a campfire, get so dirty, and sleep so soundly...better than spending the night in a motel...

My son loves nothing better than to go up into the mountains, with his friends, all with their tents and supplies, and spending the night in the open...he camped all over Europe while a student there

Get a kid to begin camping, when they are very young, and they will be campers for life...

Yes.. I think when you're a child and get used to being outside in nature, you never forget the smells, the feelings or the fun of it.. I was always an outdoor kid and still love the fishing, the campfires and the sleeping outdoors.

My kids all have it in their blood now.. and even when they visit us in the summer for overnights, they bring their tents to sleep down in the backyard.. One morning a couple summers ago, they woke up with a deer poking it's head thru the tent door..

We still love cooking outdoors, and whether it's here or at home we do it all the time.. Even at home in winter.. Nothing tastes better than food cooked out doors..
