Congrats for the sneak!
To: Lucius Cornelius Sulla
It wasn't too gratuitous, and I've done without for a long while. But now, back to our regularly scheduled programming....

Yes, congrats on the sneak! Less than a hundred to go to the triple-nought!
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Hmm... well... let's see. How to get there quickly?

How to get there quickly?Well, we could have a deep and thoughful philosophical discussion on the use of Christian symbolism in Lord of the Rings.
Or, we could have a somewhat lighter discussion about just whatever happened to the leaf clasp that Pippin left as a marker for Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli to find, and whether it will be portrayed accurately in the movie.
Or, we could each make 50 posts of "Mine!"

Mine!
But seriously, I love the dramatic interplay and symbolism in The Two Towers, particularly the use of Gollum's two natures (Slinker and Stinker, or Gollum/Smeagol) which can be compared to the two natures of man as described by.. um... someone... or what about the obvious meanings of the Elves leaving Middle Earth, or... er, Boromir was a jerk!
Oh, well, let's stick to what I'm good at. Mine!!

Oh, sure, even the title of the book indicates the use of point and countpoint to make a, uhm, point... about good and evil, and, and, the duality of man, and, uh, falling from grace to a state of, uhm, wretchedness......
Uhm...

Right, and then the theme of redemption, and the salvation which, while coming as a surprise, is inherent in the plot and foreshadowed long before.
Or perhaps we should go on to discuss how LotR related to Scandinavian and Finnish folklore. Actually the Finnish stuff is more related to the Silmarillion, but the Rohirrim seem like they stepped out of Beowulf and the Gondorians are a sort of Roman/Atlantean hybrid of - er - and the Ents are representative of Native Americans. Or maybe oppressed Eskimos or something...

I went upthread to early June, with the discussion about maximum thread length. Here is JohnRobinson's reply to ksen's inquiry about maximum thread length: '65,535. The largest value possible for a 2-byte integer field.'
So we have made 11,000 posts in the just under 2 1/2 months since early June. At that rate we would go over the top just at the beginning of next summer. I guess that there will be some acceleration in posting, so if we want, we could go on until the DVD for TTT is released, if we want to wait that long. I was wrong with the numbers last week. Sorry!
To: JenB
Yes, redemption and salvation! But, it also shows that one must desire redemption, and the consequences of refusing it... oh, wait, what I'm thinking about was in
Return of the King, wasn't it... uhm...
Oh, yeah, Finnish stuff! Have I ever mentioned there was a Finnish family in the town I grew up, named Koivenen? Suspiciously close to the early forms of Cuiviénen, the Waters of Awakening! And what about that line, "...Atalantë in the Eldarin tongue," that was a dead giveaway!
And the Ents... why, they were just thinly veiled representatives of the early environmentalist movement! Why, it's obvious!
Wait, maybe I've got it wrong...
Uhm, mine!

5.4 planets. I think I'll go for a drive...
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Koivenen... sounds like one of the heroes in Kalevala. The one who was the model for Turin Turambar, maybe? And yes, it's obvious that Numenor = Atlantis. The Valar are clearly representative of most pantheons (Greco-Roman and Norse at the very least)

'65,535. The largest value possible for a 2-byte integer field.Would you be impressed if I pointed out that 65,535 is 2 raised to the 16th power, less 1?
If not, then mine!

I think I'll go for a driveI think driving is why I got the rating I did! Driving one car to both our jobs means we drive more than 100 miles a day. So far, I still rule with 7.8 planets!
Obviously, my attitude is... Mine!
To: Scott from the Left Coast
Yes, but take away the nano-probes and what do you have?

We're gonna make the hobbit ladies start posting Viggo pictures again...
To: JenB
The Koivenen in my home town was a doctor. Or maybe he was a dentist. In either case, I don't recall him ever marrying his amnesiac sister.
Hmm... finding a good translation of the Kalevalala to read would be a good research project for me, I think.
Mine?

Um...we have some furniture from IKEA...

'65,535. The largest value possible for a 2-byte integer field. Would you be impressed if I pointed out that 65,535 is 2 raised to the 16th power, less 1? No, because you two just said the exact same thing! The largest value possible for a 2-byte integer field has to be the same as 2 raised to the 16th power, less 1. So that was a silly, space wasting post. Do more of them, it's 10:20 and church tomorrow, so let's get the precious now!
Mine.
