An elderly couple is lying in bed one morning having just awakened from a good night's sleep. He takes her hand, and she responds, "Don't touch me."

"Why not," he asks.

She answers back, "Because I'm dead."

The husband says to her, "What are you talking about? We're both lying here in bed together and talking to one another."

The wife says, "No, I'm definitely dead."

Her husband insists, "You're not dead. What in the world makes you think you're dead?"

His wife answers, "I know I'm dead. I woke up this morning and nothing hurts."

Olympia is nice, it is cooler for those who can't bear the heat. I am one of those. My Nordic ancestry did not prepare me well for the Sonoran desert. Visiting relatives in Tempe nearly kills me.

oki's mom is Swedish and her dad is Norwegian
she has nordic ancestry too
my grandparents are Polish and Ukrainian
I spent childhood summers in northern woods
I was perfectly happy in that cold Adirondack hamlet
where summer arrived on July 4th and left on July 5th
but I have bloomed here on the tropical desert
