Genetic Study Tracks the First Hawaiians
Archaeology Magazine ^ | November 2, 2026 | editors / unattributed

Science Alert reports that Alexander Ioannidis of Stanford University and his colleagues analyzed the genomes of more than 1,000 people who live in French Polynesia; 12 genomes from individuals on the island of Rapa Nui; and the genomes of people native to Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti. First, the researchers isolated segments of Polynesian ancestry with machine learning, and then they applied an identity by descent method, which can identify common ancestors of living people and people from the past. The study shows that people traveled across Polynesia in small populations, sometimes resulting in a genetic bottleneck of reduced genetic variation that can increase the odds of the occurrence of harmful mutations known as the founder effect. People who became Native Hawaiians are thought to have experienced a series of bottlenecks as they traveled long distances on small double-hulled catamarans. "Hawaii is the only Polynesian island in the Northern Hemisphere, so it's a long way from everything," Ioannidis explained. The study also suggests that Native Hawaiians are most closely related to the people of Rapa Nui. The two islands are more than 4,000 miles apart, and each one is about 2,000 miles from another island. Both populations were also found to be related to people on Mangareva Island, which may have been their launching point in French Polynesia, Ioannidis concluded. For more on early Hawaiian history, go to "Letter from Hawaii: Inside Kauai's Past."

Gee, this tropical island paradise we’re living on is no good. Let’s jump into a boat and wander around millions of square miles of uncharted ocean on the slim chance we stumble upon another tropical island paradise.

As I recall, there are many legends of escaping defeat in war. For a great deal, it was escape or die.

Why didn’t they use their hack-job COLB

I have seen other maps which show polynesian expansion. are they any different from this model of polynesian expansion?

The “Kelp Highway” to North America isn’t mentioned. Where did AmerIndians originate besides Behringia?

Probably not. The oceans didn’t freeze over in the tropics.

The Pacific isn’t 400 feet deep, so, again, no.

There were generations which lived on the water, and they had the ancient version of hibachis to cook out there. Ate a lot of sea life of course. The expansion probably happened in relatively few decades during a period when island populations got overcrowded.

My usual: https://omniglot.com/writing/langfam.htm#austronesian

Brave search: Austronesian language family
https://search.brave.com/search?q=Austronesian+language+family

The Austronesian language family is one of the world’s largest linguistic groups, comprising approximately 1,200 to 1,257 languages and spoken by roughly 386 million people. It ranks as the fifth-largest language family by number of speakers and is second only to the Niger-Congo family in terms of the number of distinct languages.

Geographically, it is the most widely dispersed language family, stretching from Madagascar in the Indian Ocean to Easter Island in the Pacific, and from Taiwan in the north to New Zealand in the south. Major languages within this family include Malay (Indonesian), Javanese, Tagalog (Filipino), Malagasy, and various Polynesian languages such as Hawaiian, Maori, and Samoan.

Linguists generally classify the family into two primary branches: Formosan languages, indigenous to Taiwan, and Malayo-Polynesian, which encompasses the vast majority of Austronesian languages in Southeast Asia and Oceania. The prevailing “Out-of-Taiwan” hypothesis suggests the family originated from Proto-Austronesian speakers in Taiwan around 5,000 to 6,000 years ago before expanding across the maritime regions.

War (more specifically, defeat in war), and commerce, and disgruntlement (regime change, dynastic change), and probably some OCD, maybe in order of occurrence.

Mid ocean gyres are biological deserts. I wouldn't have thought they could catch enough fish to raise a family that way. Of course, there would be a steady crop of barnacles!

Would that "hibachi" be chipped stone? I'm assuming thse have been found.

Exactly, I’ve often wondered how people ever got to some of those islands.
