Has climate hysteria finally run its course? I ask because the latest Hollywood blockbuster on the subject seems to have bombed.
Digger, in which Tom Cruise plays an oil tycoon so intent on drilling that he causes an ice shelf off Greenland to collapse, provoking climatic disaster, took only about $8 million in its first weekend, not great when it needs $280 million of box office takings just to break even.
According to seasoned observers it is on course to lose Warner Bros $245 million, which would make it one of the worst cinema disasters of all time. Not even an endorsement from Jane Fonda, who described it as “a new way to wake us up about climate change” seems to have enticed the public.
This didn’t used to happen. In the past climate disaster movies have tended to have a good hearing. The Day After Tomorrow, an absurd tale in which New York disappears beneath an ice sheet (how that is consistent with Al Gore’s vision of an ice-free North Pole I am not sure) was taken seriously by easily-manipulated audiences.
Five years ago, Don’t Look Up, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, broke Netflix download records. That one featured a comet heading for Earth which scientists struggle to persuade politicians to take seriously – an obvious allegory for climate change.
What has gone wrong? Maybe it is that Tom Cruise owns one private jet too many. DiCaprio seemed to get away with his private jet habit, which once involved him taking an 8,000-mile round trip across the Atlantic to collect a climate award.
Trouble is that Cruise has three jets in his hangar, which is just a little over the top by anyone’s standards. He has a Gulfstream fitted, apparently, with a jacuzzi, plus a Bombardier and a Honda for those short trips when it doesn’t quite seem worth spooling up the Gulfstream, and there will be no time to take a jacuzzi anyway.
I guess the film-going public has just had a bit too much of celebrities with a yeti-sized carbon footprint preaching climate change to them. You, the little people, need a lesson on saving the world, Cruise seems to be saying; if I need a few private jets to help me spread the message, then that is all well and good.
Sorry, but there can hardly be a conscious human on the planet who hasn’t heard of climate change. We don’t need a Hollywood film to tell us about it. As for the kind of hysteria that it portrayed in this work, that is counterproductive to promoting genuine understanding of the climate. One company’s drilling doesn’t collapse a glacier, and nor, thankfully, does one celebrity’s private jet habit.
This leaves the question of what Cruise really believes. Does he think that the oil industry, as seems to be intimated in Digger, bears sole responsibility for carbon emissions, and that its customers – like him – bear no responsibility at all? Does he think, like the people who try to sue tobacco companies for the harm caused by their smoking habits, that he is under some kind of duress to use oil companies’ products? The more you look at it, the more that Cruise comes across as the equivalent of the anti-hero in his film, so tied up with his own self-importance that he turns a blind eye to his own actions.
It is perhaps no accident that Hollywood climate preaching is being rejected now, in the midst of an oil crisis. There are plenty of people who would just like to keep their homes warm this winter, not fly off in a private jet. The reality is, however, that much you might wish the world could switch to clean energy overnight, globally fossil fuels still account for three quarters of energy consumption. We can live without Hollywood movies, but not without the oil industry.
How much money does he need before he can stop bending over for acting jobs?

A very exciting first novel by Allan Folsom in 1994. I could not put the book down till it was done. Had nothing to do with climate change whatsodamned ever!!! It would have made an incredible movie for Tom Cruise or anyone else. Imagine my disappointment when it turned out to be this pile of crap.
If you like s good type of spy novel filled with action beyond belief, check it out. It’s still not too late for anyone to attempt to make it into a movie.
Your post made me remember an ad for a video game:

Haven't played it but I'm guessing some characters radiate a healthy glow.
Cruise desperately wants to win his first Academy Award. You have to please the Wokesters in Hollywood to get that. They have shown they’ll give you one even if your film bombs so long as they like its politics. So Cruise did something he had not really done before - made a Leftist movie which bombed and lost a huge amount of money but which will please Hollywood. I bet they’ll reward him for it even as audiences reject him for it.
No it hasn't. Now that voting season has started, postcard mailers are going out to the young and older tree huggers. Nasty messages regarding the President's energy policy are the main topics. Along with the usual push for solar and wind energy as the only solution to save ths planet. It is still out there simmering below the surface and any return to power by the left will again bring it out.
Of course Global Warming became very inconvenient so they oh so cleverly switched to "climate change" so they could take credit whether it got warmer or colder.
Though the Gaia Worshipers did considerable harm in America, we have managed to fend them off for the most part. The Yurps and Canucks have utterly destroyed themselves sacrificing to Gaia.
Hell, I’m only 55 and even I’ve lived through wave after wave after wave of Leftist Fear Porn. Remember “the Day After” trying to fear monger about a nuclear war. That came on TV and they made SUCH a big deal out of it back in 1983. I called it “bedwetting” at the time.
Now that I’m in my mid 50s and I’ve been around and learned a lot of things I look back on my view when I was 12 years old and realize.............I was right all along. It was just a bunch of Leftist Bedwetting. They do this all the time.
Uh, I think you’re speaking of “Days Of Tropic Thunder” but the only thing I can remember about it, is him driving that Matchbox car up whats-her-names? thigh. /shame

They’re incognizant, inconscient, incompetent and incontinent!
Humans and their cultures (such as may have developed by then) were wiped out over 80%
I wonder what kinds of cars THEY were driving
Also: Cruise is in old man makeup which no doubt does not help with attracting the desired demographic.

“Rather than decommissioning aging nuclear power plants, we should be building new ones.”
And Somalis, Dot-Indians, and other “migrants” to build and operate them!
I expect ticket sales to jump a bit when the communists/leftists/democRATs hear that the movie is a financial bust. Many of them will immediately get on their capitalism-provided phone and buy a ticket or two. They will not go to the show because after all it really sux, but by buying a ticket they will have contributed to whatever success it garners.
Lefties do this a lot. Many left-leaning movies have one number that represents ticket sales and another number that represents actual butt-in-the-seat attendance. The attendance number is usually far less than ticket sales. Contrast this with movies with right-leaning or patriotic themes and the sales and attendance numbers are nearly identical.
Scientology: Because L. Ron Hubbard was rejected by the Masons?
I’ve liked some past disaster movies BUT I never took any of them seriously.
An asteroid is an an obvious allegory for climate myths? Not seeing the connection.
I’ve no interest in this new movie because it’s obvious leftist propaganda not that it’s a disaster movie.
How can one spend $250 fairly large on a movie?
Sounds like a USAID project.
Homer has retired or been replaced?
Here’s one we hope to see, although it won’t be shown for a long period of time:
“Ben Shapiro’s next Daily Wire film is loaded with Oscar nominees. Rob Lowe and James Franco will star in ‘Confession,’ a historical drama written by Shapiro for The Daily Wire.”
“Moscow, 1938. A former professor is dragged into Lubyanka Prison. To save himself, all he has to do is betray his priest. In a regime built on the death of God, his answer will cost him everything.”
