Processed meat may be causing rise in bowel cancer

Eating processed meat may be to blame for a boom in bowel cancer, according to a scientist.

Prof Chris Elliott, founder of the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen’s University Belfast, said that chemicals found in bacon and ham are “one of the main suspects” for increased cases of the disease.

Early-onset bowel cancer has increased substantially in adults under 50 across the world since 1990.

Studies suggest the UK has one of the fastest-rising rates, with estimates putting the increase at around 60 per cent.

Speaking to the Today programme on BBC Radio 4, Prof Elliott said the increase was “down to our environment, what we eat, what we drink”.

“One of the main suspects that I’ve been pursuing for about 10 years is the use of a particular class of chemicals in the processing of meats, particularly in bacon and ham, called nitrates or nitrites,” he said.

“There is a growing body of evidence that the presence of these in the meats that we will consume are a contributory factor to the onset of colon cancer.”

Consuming large amounts of red meat has previously been associated with an increased risk of cancer.

However, Prof Elliott said he believed that eating red meat is “actually good for us [if] consumed in the right amount”.

Instead, he warned that chemicals added to ham and bacon to give them their pink colour and increase shelf life were to blame and called on the food safety watchdog to take action by placing warning labels on certain food packaging, following similar legislation in France.

“We have to point the finger at the regulator here, the Food Standards Agency, for basically sitting on their hands,” he said.

“Other parts of the world, particularly Europe, are taking this much more seriously.”

There’s nothing to this myth. Your intestines are not “harboring” any undigested food for days or months. Some hucksters hope to get rich on this fear porn.

I had a gastro doc tell me that after about a day of not eating, everything gets cleared from the system.

Since the increase in colon cancer among young people was occurring well before 2020, I doubt it, unless you think covid shots are also time machines.

Water? Like from the toilet?

Just add more Brawndo to the diet. The body needs at least 8 glasses of Brawndo a day. It’s go what plants crave.

Prof Chris Elliott...

I remember him!

Wasn't he on Late Night with David Letterman as the man under the seats, moved on to Cabin Boy and was in Something About Mary?

We cut that stuff out when my wife started having digestive issues.

It had been a couple of year without any “deli meats.” I had a pastrami sandwich a few weeks ago. Boy did I suffer.

So, historically, Germans have had insanely high incidence of bowel cancer? You do know that almost all of their meat consumption in the 19th century through about the 1960s was processed meat, right? And they still eat insane mounts of processed meat.

Sorry to hear that - certainly some people are sensitive to just about anything.

My doctor said to avoid nitrites. My wife’s doctor said they wouldn’t work, you just need to pick better grandparents.

All processed meat, including bacon, deserves to win the Monkey Vomit Award.

So filled with salt and unpronounceable chemicals you could die just reading the label.

Your body is made of and produces so many chemicals you couldn’t possibly pronounce I doubt it could be counted. Don’t foist your opinion based on lack of education on everyone else.

I’ll be 62 this year. Definitely carrying some extra pounds. I love salt and eat as much as I want. And processed meats are on the menu whenever I want, and that’s moderately often. This annoyed me enough I ran and got my arm cuff and after that I got a reading of 122/77 - it would be lower than that if I gave it five minutes after running across the house and back and I wasn’t so annoyed - and this evening I’ll lose 15 points off the systolic and 10 points off the diastolic. And I’ve never had bloodwork that didn’t have low LDL and sky high HDL.

EVERYBODY is different. Lots of people can do what I do and have zero problems. Lots of people have to watch every single little thing they eat and they’re diabetic, hypertensive, and have cholesterol all over their arteries. YOU do YOU.

There is NOTHING “monkey vomit” about bacon. It’s a natural wonder and I thank God for its existence.

I remember when Judge Reinhold in Beverly Hills Cop said, “the average white male over 40 is carrying 40 pounds of undigested red meat in his intestines,” and most morons believed it.

Didn’t even see the Beverly Hills Cop graphic above - was it only 5 pounds? I think I remember it being more.
