No, we don’t want Canada as a 51st state; yes, we want to trade with you; and yes, your Prime Minister is on a crazed personal vendetta that could destroy you.
Have you tried listening to Canadian podcasts? Once in a while, I do, and we can conclude that Trump Derangement Syndrome is alive and well north of the border. It’s comical, but it sadly represents what they are thinking up there.
The problem is that the Canadian political class is barking up the wrong trees. I agree that President Trump took the “51st state” joke too far, but the Canadian response is totally hysterical. As I told a Canadian friend, the President can’t add a state, and people who live in red states like me do not want another California in our Electoral College, i.e., two liberal Senators and 40-something House Democrats!
With respect to negotiating a trade deal, the Canadians have turned Trump into an impossible man to deal with, such as that silly objection that the US wants to kill French culture in Quebec. That’s crazy. Most Americans find Quebec lovely, and I love hearing a hockey goal call in French. What the heck is going on? PM Carney is nervous about the separatist movement in Quebec.
So, Canadians need to get Trump out of their heads and read what Professor Victor Davis Hanson said recently:
We did not say to Canada, you better let in 45% of your current population from foreign countries who were not born in Canada, or their parents weren’t born, and they’re not going to be assimilated and integrated in melting-pot fashion.
We did not say, forego all of the rich fossil fuels in your country. Stop pipelines to other provinces from Alberta, and stress green energy, solar power

Canadians should remember how their government treated the truck drivers during COVID.
The Liberal party gave Carney the job a Prime Minister but Carney made himself a Dictator instead . He runs everything with a small group around him and never tells his Ministers what he’s doing or tells them to shut up , sounds like Obama ,LOL
While Governor of the Bank of England Carney used the same Fearmongering to try and stop BREXIT
Between the foreign-born turd worlders and the hardcore euroweenies the Canadians have screwed themselves. No cares given for those commies.
Canada has Indians and Sikhs roaming their streets with 3 foot swords thanks to Trudeau/Carney and the Liberals
Once when I was in Buffalo, we drove over to Canadia and saw some waterfalls. It was spring, but there were big chunks of ice floating in the river.
Some Freepers may remember me telling this story back in 2023 but since the subject has risen again I’ll tell it again. In June of 2023, I pulled a 25,000 boat trailer from Central Texas to Dawson City, Yukon Territory, over to Soldotna and then back to Central Texas.
We crossed into Canada at Sweetgrass-Coutts and drove approximately 700 miles through the heart of Alberta from extreme south to the northern border with Yukon Territory. The highway we were on most of the time was like one of our Interstate Highways. The shock we were in for was that there was, except for a couple large cities, almost zero traffic. You might see an 18 wheeler every 20 minutes. Often you didn’t see another car for ten minutes. My conclusion that I think is indisputable judging from traffic on this primary north south divided highway was that Canada’s economy was indeed in the tank.
I have been to Ottawa several times. My company was doing work with the Canada Ministry of Defence. As luck would have it, most of those trips were during winter.
When VDH speaks, people should listen.
During winter? I figure half of the population is in Florida.
I had a cabin in Canada for over 40 years and made some wonderful Canadian friends. While I don’t have the cabin any more, I still go there every year for a week-long fishing trip. Beautiful!
For the first time—ever!—I worry about the treatment I’ll receive if I make the trip this year. Our President does shoot from the hip too often, but I don’t think anyone in the US wants to absorb part of Canada. I do think the leaders of both countries have blown this way out of proportion and hope we can restore our previous friendliness. Personally, I like to see tariff-free commerce between us, just like our 50 states do. Politically, that’s probably not going to happen. Still, realize that a lot of this animus is personal between two people, NOT two countries.
Oh, Canada...America’s Hat™
Mirrors my experience almost exactly. My business was with CANET. It was lovely if you like knee-deep snow in March and could ignore the rude Canadians. It was kind of cool, though, watching people in Ottawa ice skate over the river to work in the morning.
Canadians are first cousins of Seattle street people.

Excellent analysis by VDH qs usual.
