McDonald’s is spending billions of dollars to boost its franchises, an effort to cement its title as the leader in fast food amid growing competition.
The chain announced Wednesday that it will invest $8.5 billion by 2036 on a series of initiatives, including remodeling restaurants, retraining its 2 million employees and adding new menu items to target high-protein eaters.
About $5 billion will be spent in the next three and a half years alone, a combination of capital support as well as rent relief for franchises.
It’s all part of a multiyear strategy to win back diners and capture more market share. Last month, McDonald’s reported its slowest quarterly growth since 2025. The chain had blamed the decline on launching too many promotions, plus inadequate customer service and its massive World Cup promotion failing to attract eaters.
The new strategy, called “Next,” aims to make the chain “the first choice for more customers, more often — while making our restaurants stronger and easier to run,” CEO Chris Kempczinski said in a press release.
McDonald’s troubles are part of broader economic issues affecting all dining chains, with rising food prices causing customers to dine out less. The chain’s stock has fallen about 20% for the year.
What’s new? In addition to rent relief and capital support, some of that multibillion-dollar spend will be used for remodeling restaurants. McDonald’s mandates its franchises remodel every decade.
Images revealed on Wednesday show expansive dining rooms, bigger play areas and improved lighting. There are also redesigned kitchens that will use new AI tools to improve speed and efficiency, which the company said it expects to earn each restaurant an additional $100,000 in cash flow via savings.
McDonald’s also focused on changing its menu as it combats new competition that includes a revitalized Burger King, ...

No, thanks, not buying their garbage under any circumstances.
The first thing they need to do is scrap the automated greeting when you go to order in the drive-thru. I’ve been first many times, but watched 2 other cars at the 2nd drive-thru order before me. They get irate when you say “hello?” at the speaker. Then, if you try and order before a real person answers they always say to repeat the order. My answer to this is to have 2 different people taking the orders and 2 working the windows.
Popeye’s beans and rice used to be delicious. Haven’t been there in decades, though.
I tried the new Whopper two weeks ago too - that's a win. Even the bun was better.
I make a much better double cheeseburger and hand cut fries than Mickey does
Sell draft beer.
The big revamp by Burger King must be cutting into Mc D’s bottomline.
It works for Waffle House.
In Vegas just the other day, nowhere near the strip. 2 cheeseburgers and 2 small fries. $14. Ridiculous.
I take the grand kids to Mickey D’s. When it’s just me and my wife, we go to sonic. Better food for a similar price.
A while ago now McDonalds looked at Starbucks and decided to emulate it to a degree. Out went Ronald and the gang and in came the coffee drinks along with a different decor. I’ll give them props that their coffee beats SBs. I don’t hate McDonalds but fast food in general apart from the convenience isn’t a good deal. Whatever McDees wants to rebrand itself as is fine with me but I doubt I’ll be using them all that much regardless.
2:30pm yesterday (not the lunch rush) I pulled into the McD’s drive-through to grab a quick meal.
There were two cars ahead of me to place my order, with a few more ahead of them lined up to advance to the pick-up window.
After five full minutes of ZERO movement by ANYBODY, I found enough room to maneuver out of the line and get the hell out of there.
I’ve decided life is too short to subject myself to that kind of “fast food” experience.
Simply applying the Consumer Price Index, that object should cost $1.27 today ...
I think McDogbarf charges more than that.
Hmmm...
Changing their name to “Six Guys” and using real meat???
Don’t forget the purple drank
Applying the Consumer Price Index to that meal means that it should cost right about $10.00 today. How does that price compare to actual price at McDogbarf for that meal?
Went to use my shovel but it was still buffering. I had to call customer service and after arguing with the AI program for 20 minutes I was told I had to upgrade to their premium shovel service for only 5.99 a month.
Does everything need to be tied to a computer???
I read this whole thread and no one mentioned that X has posts about human meat being in the hamburger at Mc Donald’s. How would you overcome that? It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not because it’s so terrible that I’m surprised anyone would chance it.
Bring back the dollar menu.
And bring back the smiling black guy as the CEO....I don’t remember his name, but he loved his job and the product.
Apply the Consumer Price Index to that ... translates to about $1.40 in the mid 1960s.
Still think it's ridiculous?
Is your beef with McDonald's or with The Federal Reserve?
