I see that as pretty much equivalent to -- learn to play guitar, become a major rock star, earn $500M. That sort of career plan really does work for some people. But not a lot of people. You learn guitar, you try to be a professional musician, the opportunities do not come, you make no money, and you find you have really nothing to fall back on and you have a sad life. You made a big bet, and it just didn't pay off. [shrug]
If you are a really good engineer, you can try to work for Musk. He takes only the best of the best. Is that you? If it is, congratulations. Good! I went to an in-person interview for a remote job in NYC. I was shocked when 20 other people showed up too. I was not surprised that 15 of the 20 were Indian.

We have a record 730,000 H1b’s in the country right now. We need to dramatically reduce that number. The fee needs to apply to RENEWALS, not just new applications.
Everybody always says tech. You don’t realize how many H1b Indians there are in banking. Any of those big banking towers you see where the major banks have their offices....I guarantee you 1/4 of the building are H1b Indians.
And its not just in tech roles.
Seems like a high fee is a good idea - if companies, really, really need some unique genius from another country - they can still get him or her - but make it financially painful to replace regular middle-of-the-pack employees with cheaper imported help.
Need someone that is worth $1-2M a year? then $200K fee is not a big deal - need to replace a $135K programmer with an $75K programmer from another country...now that math doesn’t work as well.
