Who makes that determination? Something similar happened to a relative of mine, although the injury was not nearly as severe as this guy’s.
In my relative’s case, I was told that the insurance company has a staff of doctors. One of them is chosen at random, and that doctor reviews the patient’s records remotely. The doctor does not actually examine the patient.
So here’s what I’m thinking. A doctor who approved of more treatment than the norm would be quietly dropped from the program.
By the way, my relative’s claim was denied by the remote doctor.

South Carolina uses the federally-operated Obamacare “marketplace” which decides which crony-insider insurance companies get to play in the sandbox, and what they offer.
Ironically, Obamacare and the American Left also created the likes of Luigi Mangioni (who killed the CEO of United Health) because of “evil insurance companies.”
So we have a bizarre example of a quasi-socialist state-run system deciding “winners and losers” while at the same time encouraging political radicals to call for the destruction of the very same system

I truly feel sorry for the boy and family.
Frankly, this boy is lucky and no matter what the final outcome, it’ll be about as good as it can be may the family realize this now or not.
His mother is fighting for him, and having people helping him along, keeping up his spirit (if conscious), advocating for him with insurance, medical staff, etc. is a (((HUGE))) help. The mere hearing of sounds, seeing things, them talking to him, makes him use his brain!
I can only respect this mothers effort in doing ANYTHING she can to help her son.
I hope he recovers. I do not say this in cliche. I have personally witnessed someone that was written off as brain dead, where the family was being pushed for organ donation, recover! He over dosed on drugs, his friends were scared and abandoned him not notifying the authorities. By mere chance, the mother left work early that day and found her son in the bathroom, basically dead on the floor. This man isn’t 100% today, but he has a girlfriend, laughs and knows who he and his family are, job, lives independently... Especially with (((YOUNGER PEOPLE))), things often look horrible in the beginning and it’s easy to despair, but it eventually starts improving little by little.

And yeah we can reform how health care is handled - NOT how it’ paid for. How it’s paid for is a scammer’s wet dream. Reform it with AI options - and let each citizen control the first thousand paid in medical bills. What’s left at the end of the year of that thousand belongs to the citizen. Half for him - half to roll over into his account. That make each citizen responsible for watching for fraud. And it makes each citizen find the ‘best medical deal’. Incentives, incentives incentives.
I feel sorry for the mother — she’s in a horrible situation. Insurance policies have terms and maximum limits designed to protect them from being driven out of business by a massive claims, and thus either unable to pay “normal” claims or forced to charge premiums few could afford. I suspect the insurer deems that meaningful “rehab” is an unrealistic expectation. Perhaps she should have an attorney that specializes in this sort of thing read the policy. If he/she sees a plausible argument that the insurer owes her son the desired treatment, he/she will know how to push the buttons.
What does the doctor want done?
What is the doctor’s experience with such treatment in like cases? Describe three cases picked from memory.
Would people pay to have it done if they made $200,000/year and lacked insurance?
How about we pay twice the standard rate if the treatment works and zilch if it doesn’t, with the provider taking on the risk?
Does it need a professionally trained person to do the work?
Why do media outlets troll victimhood?
I know health insurers can be cold and callous. I know that they make bad decisions. But not all denials are evil or based on greed. The guy was in a coma for over a month and has a serious brain injury. The cost of rehab will be in the millions. UnitedHealthcare does not have a money printing machine in its basement. If they didn’t make tough decisions, your premiums would go up by 20% per year instead of 10%. Maybe this denial is a wrong decision. I don’t know the details and facts. But the knee-jerk sob story of “poor mom can’t get her disabled son medical care due to evil insurance company” is shallow clickbait.

She would be much better off with Canadian Healthcare and British health care/s
OK number 1 the hospital would submit claims for his care and number 2 the hospital would make rehab arrangements for care. Mom screwed up when she tried to take charge
