Your healthcare insurance, or HMO-PPO, does not cover your motor vehicle related injuries. You're required to have vehicle insurance for such injuries. You might have coordination of benefits, but that is unlikely.

Why do media outlets troll victimhood?

I was also wondering why this is not about motor vehicle insurance, but he probably blew through whatever coverage he had a long time ago considering the severity of the reported injuries / lengthy hospital stay.
