A mother has said she feels 'helpless' and called UnitedHealthcare money-hungry after the insurance company allegedly denied covering her son's rehab for a brain injury.
Peyton Alvarez, a 25-year-old airline mechanic at PSA Airlines, crashed into a tree while riding his motorcycle in Greenville, South Carolina, on April 28.
Although he was wearing a helmet and other protective gear, the collision caused a serious brain injury that left him unconscious for a month and a half. Doctors told his mother, Trina Alvarez, that Peyton may never wake up.
But the young man eventually opened his right eye in early June, and he can move his left arm and wiggle his toes when prompted, Trina told the Daily Mail.
Peyton's mom submitted a claim with her son's insurance plan, managed by UnitedHealthcare through his employer, and she made the arrangements to have him transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a top brain injury rehabilitation facility.
But on July 7, Trina was crushed when she received a denial letter from UnitedHealthcare, which stated that Peyton's treatment at the facility was 'medically unnecessary.'
'It is so frustrating. It makes me so angry that they can control what happens with my son because the longer he stays at the hospital he's at, the less chance he has to wake up,' Trina told the Daily Mail.
'When you push a parent to the point of feeling like they are helpless, and may contribute to whether their son may ever be able to talk or move his arms and legs or sit up on his own, that should not be allowed,' she added.

I did not read any mention of drug over dose nor alcohol, etc. in this article.
2.) However, the intent or method of injury is irrelevant. Even if someone shoots themselves in the head, intentionally. You must do all you can to help them. You do not know the circumstances, background, etc. and most of what you hear is some version of the truth that has been spun to sell some “philosophy” by those telling the story. If this is a UK paper, they will of course have a socialized healthcare bias they like to push. If you're in healthcare, you're ONLY concern should be, “what can I do to improve the probability of a positive outcome?”
These big corporations pay money for services to get high online reviews/ratings, they have some influence over the media itself as someone that spends a lot on advertising.
UHC has a reputation to try to skimp and save a buck wherever they can in such cases, even if according to their own policies the person is likely entitled these benefits. But when you delay and create hurdles, some folks give up, a few may even die, and you might not need to pay anymore. Do you think it's a mere coincidence that it can take up to a year to get money back for a claim, even for a common situation? Do that for 30,000 people over a year, and that's easily $40 million (based on average claim size) that were in the insurance companies pocket for a longer time...

You have a few with enormous pull in government, because the political apparatus itself runs on money: the party, campaigns, lobbying, lawsuits, paying off politicians 100 different ways that are legal (they and their families all want to get rich too). These same people have also learned to have a media presence / influence: Gates, Buffet, Musk, Bezos, Walton’s, or they are themselves in the media world like a Zuckerberg...
The problem is, that acting in their “self interest” often works AGAINST this nations best interests, may that be national security (helping industrialize and technologically advance China), the middle class and national wealth (trade deficits and export of manufacturing), a democratic process (elections being fudged with non-citizens voting), following basic constitutional principals (Lawfare), or internal security and safety as millions of undocumented people flood our country (cheap labor and the Latino voting block). A small group benefits at the expense to the rest of the nation.
I am by no means a socialist or one that is jealous of success (I don’t preach eating the rich). I even support free markets where fair trade can be established and those we are trading with aren’t violating even the most basic principals we claim to represent. But what we have today in the US is very dangerous. You have a small group of super wealthy our political class panders to. These people get what they want most of the time, even if that goes against what the majority of Americans want at the time. May that be Republicans or Democrats in office, it does not matter on these issues. How were George H. Bush, Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama any different regards China and most favored trade status or support to the WTO when that was up for grabs? They weren’t. Made absolutely no difference who was in power? Why do you think that is? Do you think the majority of Americans (((ever))) supported the closing of US based factories and them moving to China?
You are right, we face big troubles.
But it’s not an insurance company being asked to pay what they promised.
I would add: do you eat salty foods, have a salt shaker on the table, eat too many carbs but not enough fiber, eat trans fats but not enough fats, eat too much fruit or drink fruit juice, sugary soda, beer, do you ever smoke cigars, do you walk 10,000 steps a day or bicycle, and when you do, do you wear reflective tape and never cross a busy intersection, do you ever ride a bus or train or take an Uber, have you ever climbed a ladder to clean your gutters or done your own electrical work to install a light fixture, do you have a cross saw or other dangerous power tools, do you ski, do you own a gun, do you hunt…
