Woman Dropping Her Son Off for College at UC-Berkeley Stunned by Tons of Homeless Tents and Garbage Around Dorms (VIDEO)

Imagine you are dropping your child off for the first day of college, and when you get to his dorm it is surrounded by mountains of garbage and homeless people living in sidewalk tents.

That's exactly what happened to one woman who also happens to work in journalism and decided to break out her phone to document the experience.

If you're from out of state, tuition at UC-Berkeley can run up to around $50,000 per year with room and board. Who would expect to see homeless encampments and garbage on the streets at those prices?

The New York Post reports:

Mom rages after disgusting homeless camp greets son on arrival to elite California college

A California mother has blasted Berkeley officials over a massive homeless encampment near her son’s UC Berkeley housing unit — filled with rows of tents, piles of trash and debris.

“I just dropped my son off at @UCBerkeley housing and as we were approaching we saw this behind his apartments. Shame on @CityofBerkeley @CityofAlbanyCA @UCBerkeleyNews,” TV reporter and mom Lyanne Melendez wrote on X.

Melendez shared video of the sprawling encampment along the 1150 block of Harrison Street, near student housing and businesses frequented by students, less than three miles from the university’s main campus.

The California Post visited the area Wednesday and observed numerous tents and makeshift shelters packed closely together near a Tesla service facility, along with significant amounts of belongings and debris surrounding the structures.

Some areas appeared to have limited space for pedestrians, while tarps, personal belongings and other materials were spread throughout the encampment.

From the article: ...the sprawling encampment along the 1150 block of Harrison Street, near student housing and businesses frequented by students, less than three miles from the university’s main campus.

So she had to go three miles away to find a homeless encampment.

You and others need to explain some day to the rest of us just how you know how anyone else has voted....unless you’re a personal friend of the person in the conversation/article, you’re just repeating the same old mantra...you DON’T KNOW!

A good family does not let their kid go to Berkeley.

The mother: "Why am I paying $2,000 a month for your room in the dorms when you could be camping out here for free?!"

Welcome to the Bay Area. About 10 years ago I went down to a wedding not far from Stanford. On the main drag from SFO past south through Stanford there were miles and miles of broken down RVs, tents, and all manner of er of garbage along the street. You couldn’t even see Stanford property thanks to the wall of RVs.

Couldn’t happen to a better place.

It’s been that way for years...

You can see how beautiful the town once was, home of UC Berkeley, the crown jewel of the UC system.

My daughter and her friend were accepted and went to a student orientation - the friend immediately withdrew her acceptance after looking around the area. “Us” parents were told repeatedly how “safe” the campus is and that there are “cameras everywhere.”

My daughter finished her degree, moved out of the area immediately - and has never been back.

Something that I always see in those videos, is the wealth of goods accumulated and used by those homeless campers, the incredible abundance and duplicates.

The coolers and BBQs and lawn furniture you have in your yard, the expensive lumber leaning against your house, building materials, shade umbrellas, propane tanks, bicycles, anything and everything that you used to leave outside and is now gone? Guess where it goes.

There are unwritten laws these days. The HOTH Act among them. Hands off the homeless!

I have personally toured hospitals in NYC with homeless encampments in their underground parking lots. Must save money on ambulances if you can just drag overdosed, diseased, and psychotic people to an elevator right to the ER.

But the advantage of having them in college dorms is not so obvious.

Or perhaps they are entitled alumni?

Until the USA decides to actually get a hold of all the illegals entering the USA things aren't going to change. Lots of FREEBES. When those disappear then look out for stealing as humans need food be it legal or illegal. jmo

They wade the RIO Grande and find ways to get over or around the barry fence.
