A woman in Florida has lost her arm following an alligator attack that took place Saturday. A hero boater who was in the area possibly saved her life.
With a group of swimmers, the woman was in the Silver River around Ocala when all of a sudden she saw an alligator heading in her direction, and in response, she used a paddle in an attempt to ward it off. The gator instead bit her right arm and pulled her underwater.
Not far from the scene, John Gamache and his father were on a boat eating lunch when they could hear the commotion.
“I looked just upriver from us a couple hundred feet and saw an alligator head way above the water and going full speed towards the swimmers,” said Gamache while speaking with FOX 35 Orlando.

— New York Post (@nypost) August 10, 2026 Immediately, Gamache rushed his boat to the scene, with the vessel scaring the alligator away from the woman.
When Gamache reached the woman, he witnessed gruesome visuals.
“It was a terrible injury, bones poking out, blood everywhere. Obviously, the minutes mattered,” said Gamache, per FOX 35.
As the woman was losing blood, Gamache took a rope on his boat to tie off her arm that was injured. His father assisted with getting the rest of the group, which included children, out of the river and placed onto the boat.
The family of the woman spoke Sunday with FOX 35 and stated that she survived the alligator attack. Losing her right arm, she was ultimately released from the hospital and is in recovery at home.

I live on salt water now and alligators are not a big problem, but the bears are wreaking havoc all over town. Not safe to walk at night these days, or go outside without checking. The authorities say, it’s their territory so bears are free to roam.
BTW, I had a huge black bear walk onto my front porch a couple weeks ago while I was enjoying a late evening.
Could it be that predators are starting to lose their fear of man? Back in the day men in the wild were more likely to be armed, actually hunting, for meat, trophies, or maybe just for sport.
Not so much anymore. They go out to hike and play, not hunt. Not only do they not have guns, they might have snacks!

Having fished, many years ago, all over the Ocala Wildlife Management Area, anyone swimming in those waters is seriously mentally deficient...
Suddenly I feel better about saying "here kitty kitty kitty" to one of the neighborhoods strays that was just at the edge of my porch light. Then I learned the difference between Felidae and Mephitidae. Fortunately my new friend didn't come too close and stink up my evening as I ran back inside the house.

I would guess they were of foreign, maybe illegal, persuasion. Most people know better than to swim in those waters.
Below is the alligator hunting season info. They need to make it year round — no limit — for a couple of years so that the population can be reduced.
“Florida’s statewide recreational alligator hunting season runs from August 15 through November 8. The season is divided into four assigned quota weeks starting August 15, followed by an open harvest period from September 12 to November 8. Each permit allows the harvest of two alligators”
I agree. Year round for a while, no limit on harvesting. The alligator population is seriously still out of control.
I love Florida, but I don’t see myself moving back any time soon. Visits to family will have to suffice.

Shouldn’t you check the immediate area for gators before swimming?! Better yet don’t go swimming in natural bodies of water in gator-infested Florida!

It’s not just Florida. Gators are common from Texas to North Carolina..................
